Focus RS Investment?
Hi all, I'm new to this forum as you can see from my post count!
I have a couple of questions.....I'm at the time of my life where I can afford to buy a car that I have always wanted ie. a little spare money and able to afford the insurance (due to aging
).
I'm looking at a MK2 RS as I've always loved fords (my 1st cars was a 1976 Mk2 Escort, My current one is a black Focus zetec S..sporty looking and a great family car)
Do you all think its a good buy as an investment and to use as my daily?....I will be keeping it a long time and keep it standard.
The mk 1 RS is picking up in value steadily and I can't see it dropping down in value again......the MK2 RS in my veiw is the last of a kind in a few ways, let me explain.
The mk2 is probbaly going to be the last FWD RS,
Probably the last with a great sounding engine (the exhaust sounds great on the mk3, but the 5 cyl engine on the mk 2 is what gets my juices flowing,
Possibly the last wild/imposing looking one (Ford have taken the RS to the USA, and they like them a little more subdued),
and for the same reason as the last point, the mk2 is possibly going to be the last 3 door.
I think they may drop a little in price over the next couple of years but then head upwards........What do you all think?
I would really appreciate honest opinions from you lads and lasses that have been around the scene for a while.

Thanks in advance
John

Welcome. Not sure that the mk2 was in limited enough numbers to make it rare enough for a lot of years. For value we need a desire and scarcity...but the RS brand has always done well at some point.
I think the antiques road show said that to create modern value you need something that was disposable...like a Harrods China set, loads of people buy them, break them and then throw away...wait a bit and nostalgia builds and the want comes back' just like Raleigh choppers and 205 gtis.

I agree with what you say..it won't be for a few years yet, but they seem to hold their value quite well for a modern car, don't they? I can't afford to buy one and sit it in the garage so it will be used to get me to work. It would be a long term thing for me....I tend to keep hold of my cars
I also own a Mk1 Morris Mini Cooper which I've had for 26 years...they took a few years to go up in value, but they have got there now. I've always loved the Cossies and RS's so nows my chance...I just think the MK2 RS will be one for the future...lets face it if a Pug 205 GTI is going up in value, I think an RS with the cult following most old sporty Fords seem to have, will be a good bet for the future.

Mk1 rs is a classic and limited numbers makes it a collectable car
Mk2 made in large numbers and will take a very long time to increase in value and as a daily would be difficult to keep nice.
Just.my opinion.

An ultimate green 60 reg unmodified Focus RS with 1800 miles sold @ auction last month for £41,000.
Good ones are getting increasingly hard to find already. Lots of them have been modified and abused, this will ultimately push the prices up for mint examples as you can see from the above auction price.

i purchased an escort cosworth about 10 years ago now and it's worth a fair bit more now but it will never be a life changing amount.
better off buying an rs car to use and enjoy and not worry about its value, if you intend to use it as a daily then wear and tear will be factored in also.
prices could still fluctuate as they seem very high at the moment and I would be wary of buying a car for top money in the current climate.

Use a mk2 rs daily for long enough and it will have rusty arches and a worn out drivers seat bolster.
Add in modern car electronics and they prob won't be here in 15 years like the mk1 is.
Best buying 1 and storing away but they hold their value well so getting a good car cheap will be impossible and will take a while to make money on it.

Cheers for the input all.....If I get one in the summer it isn't purely for investment....I will use it. I don't tend to do too many miles a year so won't rack up the miles.
Just looking around at the prices though, I'd be looking at 30 to 40k miles around the £20k mark, do they sell at that sort of price?
I agree Gary Jones a lot of cars you see are modified and abused, and as more of them get used daily the numbers will decline, just look at how Pug 205 GTI's are rising in value, and they were built in massive numbers compared to the mk2 RS.
A quick search on 'howmanyleft' shows at Quarter 4 2015 4,496 on the road (plus 870 sorned) but that includes Approx 1710 ( plus143 Sorn) Mk1 RS. That means approx 3513 Mk 2 RS still around, not massive numbers, as a few have said....some will rot away, some will I'm sure be written off
, and a lot will be modified.
Don't get me wrong I know it will take a long time, so I won't hold my breath LOL. The price of good Escort Cossies and door Sierra Cossies has sky rocketed over the last 5 years pricing mere mortals out of the game, so people look further down the food chain for a more affordable fix. I've seen it with Minis....Cooper S's are silly money now...Coopers have gone the same and now the less charismatic 1275GT is rising fast.
So maybe one day the Mk2 will rise.......a little!
Ta for all your thoughts
