Default Why is my coolant bottle empty but I can drive over 700 miles without any problems ?

car - 2006 mk2 ford focus sport 1.8 TDCI.

When I fill coolant tank to max after driving 10 mins or so and I look the bottle is empty but there is enough water in it that I can driver over 700 + miles before I decide to refill despite there being enough water , I know this as when removing cap when hot the water fills the bottle almost then gurgles back down. there is plenty of heat when turning fans on.

Car had a chemical test 14 months ago because it was loosing water very slowly with no leaks, test indicated a possible bad head gasket.
however 14 months on there is no oil/water mixing, no power loss, no smoke, the only symptom is having to top up the water time-time.

If I know for sure head gasket is bad I would replace the head gasket ( friend said he could do it for £430 inc head skim + parts) then I would probably just do it but I suspect other possible big problems with the car so I'm keeping my options open.

here is where I am baffled, When I pour water in the coolant tank if I drive around for 10 minutes or so the water in the coolant bottle is empty but I still am able to drive around for about a month before I decide to refill and whenever I take cap off when engine is hot the water rushes up to the top of the bottle and almost fills the bottle then gurgles down a bit and stops with the water remaining at half way, there is plenty of heat in the car and the heat gets roasting so no problems there. Just wondering why this is ?

Have the cooling system pressure tested, has the coolant tank got a crack in it?

the coolant bottle and cap were replaced last year for brand new, cheers

about a year ago over 6 month period radiator leaks, metal cooling pipe leaked and 2 rubber hoses but 6 months on nothing else has leaked or burst, top rad hose does feel rather pressurised but have been told by different mechanic that it is too much other said perfectly fine

When are you going to wake up and just get rid of your car? Every week you have a new problem to deal with and surely you can see it is not worth the hassle?
Would you not want a car that is reliable and just needs its regular service and cleaning every now and again?
As we have all seen , your mechanical expertise leaves a lot to be desired so why do you want to be constantly under the bonnet trying to fix things?

hi, thanks for your kind reply.

As I said car runs great apart from having to top up water once in a while.

I have to say I have had problems with this car but only after other people have fucked up jobs and I have been trying to put them right.
I have never ever had any problems with my car after doing any repairs myself, everything I've repaired on my car I've had no problems with at all, the problems came after other people messed things up, now this is why I now do all the repairs on my car myself despite no training.
to be honest everything I have repaired I have found easy and have saved over £500 in the last few months repairing it myself.

Why would you decide to drive for a month with an empty coolant bottle?
Why are you keeping your options open as you suspect bigger problems,it's a diesel focus with a blown head gasket.
Why are you worrying about it,keep topping it up if you don't think it's a problem and stop coming on here asking questions every 5 minutes.
This is not a diesel focus forum where everybody's a mechanic and expert on the marque, the folk that have tried to help are being ignored so either get it fixed by someone who knows what they are doing or drive it until it stops.

So someone's done a sniffer test and it indicated blown headasket? I'd get another sniffer test done to double check mate and go from there

I was wondering that too.
It amazes me why some people ask questions and don't bother to put what car it's about.
A bit more history about the car would help as well..

No dis-respect but if you have found everything easy to repair why did it take you so long to attempt to repair the turbo pipe, 40 + hours I think you said and how many posts pleading for help on this forum?
No one on this forum minds giving free advice but why dont you listen and take it in?
You say other people are to blame for not doing repairs correctly but they were obviously not proper skilled mechanics. There are loads of garages that could have done the work and probably at a reasonable rate to a first class standard.
My final words on this are either keep trying to do the repairs yourself but when you find that you cant manage them just keep it to yourself or get yourself something decent to drive and save yourself the hassle!!
