Default Alternator fault.

I've just fitted a new starter motor, and noticed the alternator isn't charging.

Is this something that can be affected by the starter or is it just coincidence?

It won't be given what you have said, check the blue wire on the back of it.

Supposedly if the bulb blows it can stop it charging too as it breaks the circuit.

It will, as the bulb forms part of the circuit, although I have never known one to blow.

checked the bulb and it was ok, and tried wiring the alternator straight to the battery and it started charging. So after exhausting all options it has to be the wiring somewhere. So I will have to do some exploring when the weather clears up a bit.

Brake lights work, I'm sure it's the same fuse? Check the fuse anyway, I had a short on my brake pedal switch causing the fuse to blow, and stopped it charging

the blue wire has connector on wing or under radiator it may look ok but have known the copper to turn to dust wont charge without warning light unless you rev the bollocks out of the car also check the charging wire between the starter and the alternator seen them suffer the same problem

Just done this on mine.

Thick red cable from battery to starter then it piggy backs to the alternator.

It earth's through the housing and the thin blue wire runs up the drivers wing direct the the back of the clocks.

It does sound like youv'e disturbed something

I barely moved the wires when swapping the starter so one of the wires must have been on its last legs. As much of a pain as it is, it would have probably happend shortly anyway.

Had it on mine (Cosworth) but the same setup, I rewired it.

What happens is the wire gets cooked by the turbo, it's worth checking whether you have power at the connector.

Ran a wire from the alternator to the back of the clocks. Got a battery light with ignition on and the alt is charging with the engine running.

Am I ok just to run a new wire straight from the alternator to the clocks? Save me trying to repair/replace the other in the loom.
