I am re engineering the charge cooling and engine cooling parts of my YB powered Westfield.


We are shoehorning in a Garrett bar and plate intercooler in the front and moving the radiator to the rear. We should have no problem with airflow or heatsoak but one possible issue is going to be water flow and most probably issues at idle and low rpm such as you`d get stuck in traffic.
It`s impossible to get flow data regarding the cossie 4x4 water pump with regards to flow and pressure gradients so this is going to have to be a bit of a suck it and see.


1. it might just flow enough that it`s not a problem bearing in mind there`s not going to be an awful lot more water because a Westfield is tiny. The rad will be in a raised position though compared to standard.


2. we will need an electric booster pump just before the pipes rise up the radiator in the rear


3. another way of doing it is doing away with the mechanical water pump completely and put a specialist automotive electric coolant pump in such as BMW use in their 335i etc. This can be done by removing the water pump impeller and thermostat and having the electric motor governed by a separate electronic thermostat.


The rad will have a bleed point and there will be a small expansion tank above it.


Seems like I am removing one fail point (chargecooler pump) and adding another though.
Of course in an ideal world option 1 would work no issues. I think I prefer option 2 as there is inbuilt redundancy.
There are many pumps that will do this such as Davies Craig, Meziere etc.


I`m sure this has been done before. Any advice peeps? I know Pauljh rear mounted the rad in his Dax Cosworth but can`t seem to get hold of him.

 

I wonder if a call to Jenspeed might help as he has done some rear rad set ups.

Might have some mags with his cars in will have a look.
