Default How to remove differential oil seal

Just wondering if there are any special tricks for removing an oil seal from a cossie front diff.

Got the drive shaft out and can get to the seal, do I need a special tool to pull the seal out or is there a trick to doing it with normal tools?

Can you not get a screw driver in the hole and behind the seal amd pull/hook it out.

I did try put it's stuck in there pretty good, screwdriver just ended up chewing up the rubber.

Seen on youtube you can put a screw into the seal and then try and lever it out so going to give that a go this morning, failing that might try and get a proper tool for it.

Buy a seal puller, they're cheap and very effective. If you can get access ok

But dont scrape the housing the seal sits into.

Cheers for suggestion, did try and get a seal puller but my local parts / tools shop didn't have any.

Took the bearing housing out in the end and gently tapping the seal out with a screwdriver and rubber mallet.

Was a bit worried about taking the housing out because it only had about three teeth left on it (someone's obviously been a bit heavy handed in the past) but was barely above hand tight, also slightly concerned the retaining screw wasn't there.

Don't suppose it's going to be even remotely possible to get just a new bearing housing and retaining screw / bracket.

Les, do you have the Rover part number for that pinion seal? I have never seen the double lip/spring pinion seal in Australia and I am looking for a more effective seal because my upside down rear diff really floods the normal pinion seal.http://googgl.me/W0hbV
