Default puma vvt question?

Does anyone know if the VVT system on the puma 1.7 zetec se engine is progressive or just a simple on/off at a fixed RPM. How does it operate?
reason for asking is I am interested if I could get an after marked ECU to switch it on/off, or is this a no go area.
Any info would be much appreciated guys.

Progressive mate you don't know it's there or hear anything like vtec, starts at a very low rpm giving good torque.

The inlet pulley is two separate sections that allow about 10 degrees of movement before it actually starts to engage the cam if you know what I mean. That's where the vvt/vct is.
