Default Fuel pump removal MK3 1.8

Hi all I've just acquired a 2001 Y plate Mondy petrol as a runaround from a guy from down the road, with an issue that I'm pretty sure I've found.
I have spark, I've checked fuse and relay for the pump and all ok. There is no noise from the pump when the ignition is on. I have power to the pump. It's seems there no fuel getting to the injectors.
My question is this. As you prob know the appature under the seat is offset to the pump on top of the tank. Haynes says remove the tank, but CAN it be removed in situ without cutting and making the hole bigger?
Thanks

Can you elaborate? Will the ring and the top of the sender pull through the hole, being offset

Just to wrap this up....all done a running like a champ. Thing is, why the hell didn't ford just make the hole larger? In the i levered the hole outwards so the lip of the hole was vertical. It was still a tight squeeze to get the lock ring out and but better than fannying around with dropping the tank. So for those that may stumble across this thread it is doable. You'll have an ugly looking hole but who cares when the seats cover it!
