Default Jaguar x type and mini cooper s buying help!

So tomorrow I'm going to look with my mum at these two cars. She has seen a Jaguar that she really likes but i said they look a bit dated now plus the engine is like an old tractor.

The jaguar is a 2.0 diesel on about 2008 plate i think.

This is said mini i said go look at

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...mini&logcode=p

What should i look for on both?

Thanks.

loads of info online, jags suffer with some mondeo issues, the older x types are starting to rot on the sills and inner sills/floor to sills.

Mini's have loads of common failings, power steering pumps, oil leaks, gearbox issues, body control moudules, rusty brake pipes. Front suspension are bushes (pain to change)

I have been looking but didn't know if anyone knows these cars first hand.

Didn't want her to buy a lemon but i know any car can be a dog. Another thing is are they both about the same to fix?

Can't comment on the Jag but Mind's aren't great to work on. Had a core plug go on the back of my mates Cooper S block and sorting it without pulling the engine was a pig. Changing clutch was no fun either.

Minis are a dick to work on, the electric power steering WILL fail also. I believe anything before 53 was subject to a randomly imploding gearbox too so a 2006-7 car should be good on that front.

My girlfriend had one for a couple of years, it was a fun car to drive, smart and fairly comfortable interior however the boot is handbag sized and despite handling well and feeling nice and go karty I wouldn't describe them as being a stable motorway type of car. The ride is harsh and totally horrid if you are sitting in the back.

The Xtype is more smart mondingo so a pretty decent car. If she doesn't do big miles then she won't need an oil burner, my choice for my old dear would be a 2.5 V6 AWD Auto which is a great driving and very stable car!

Rob,

Plus a low mileage V6 will be substantially cheaper than a similar spec/mileage diesel, will be smoother and i suspect more reliable (no wanky pump/turbo/injectors to change in 3-4 years time). The face lift X-types look alright too, early (pre face lift) cars do indeed look a bit long in the tooth now.

Hope that helps

Rob,

Well she has gone for the jaguar thats a 2.0 diesel.

Glenn: She said she wants something with class. I said about the mini as she likes them and has a 94 mini so i thought why not but we didn't even get to look at any.

Thanks for the help though everyone!

Yep im a peasant and can only afford old bangers.

One of my examples of badge snobbery is what is happening to my mate now. He bought a 530d BMW (the one in the bmw thread on the recovery truck) he paid 8.5k. He had it a month and on the way to Manchester the car cut out. He got it recovered to a garage.

It turned out that the vanos flaps?? and turbo has shit themselves. A month later he got the car back and he said its flat as a fart. Now it got a problem with the gearbox.

Its at his mates garage and has been the begining of January. His mate has given him a 1tlr nissan micra to use.

So hes paid all that money and the 500quid micra is just doing the same job has his bm did.

You took that a lot more seriously than I thought you would

I don't think a jag or a mini is a snobby car tbh.... audi's and beemers are a different story, sometimes... people think they are much more reliable etc than they really are.

I dont take anything to heart matey. Some people get upset on the Internet,i dont i just say how i feel about things.

Another thing ive found is that people buy posh cars and then when they need bits they moan about how much the parts cost. Imo if you can afford the car you can afford to repair it.

Sorry to the original op for taking over his thread lol.

Minis after 2004 had getrag gearboxes, alot more reliable than the old midland box pre 2004.

Bottom arm bushes are common, as are clutch, and crankshaft oil seal, if any need doing ya best off doing all 3 as they are all subframe out jobs. Ive just sold the mrs cooper convertible last week.

From a class point of view I think the image is one thing the mini has in its favour as it's relatively class-less and can blend in well while not looking too shouty. I've been on the lookout for a decent cheap one for my sister for when her current focus gives up.

Don't worry about taking over as i love banter!

Yeah i guess she does what badge snobbery, She really liked my A4 i just sold and said she would of had that but does not like estates (Avant )

The mini would never be a snobbery car but its something she likes and with a cooper s they do look better on the eyes. My Dad was the one who said "I'm not having a bloody mini" But he will never go in the jaguar anyway since he has his own truck and is getting a newer one...

Also Glenn, Ive got badge snobbery all over since i moved over to the A4 thats why I'm getting... (any chance to say it again) an RS3

I did the power steering pump and it wasn't difficult as far as things like that go, but most places wanted Ł300 for a recon one!

In the end I stripped it down and the silly fuckers had left a load of holes open in the case so all the shitty worn brush dust caked its self all over the control board/components etc. A quick wash off, new brushes that I had made by a local company, some silicon sealant and it was good for another 20K before the gearbox went all not worky.

Its only the internet lol. I do try my best to help people on here too

If we all liked the same things and thought the same it would be a boring world.
