Was reading through the latest Fast Ford mag last night and noticed in the Ford Stats they have printed that the standard power figure's between the 2WD & 4WD are really different!
Think it said the 2WD had 204bhp from factory, and the 4WD had 220bhp from factory! Why is there such a difference from what I thought would be the same engines used?
Sorry if this has been asked before! lol

They are more or less the same engines.BUT i think ford left the 4wd with more power as the 4wd system takes a lot of power from the flywheel figure to the at the wheel figure. If you understand that.

the power figures quoted are correct, dont forget the 4x4 engine is made of 80% revised parts or some thing like that anyway. And as Stretch says the reason was to compensate for the transmission loss.

both cat and non cat cossie 4x4 are rated at 220bhp and the escos is rated at 227bhp with a cat, only when you need big bhp gains is it needed to remove the cat, but having said that le mans type sports cars have to use cats and the produce 500bhp+

taking the cat off would give u more power in any case no matter how efficient it is
removing any restriction gives you the potential for more power, but if all that you do is remove the restriction and improve the VE but don't add any extra fuel (which you don't with the MAP based ecu as it does not measure airflow, only guess it), you may even lose power (due to moving to the lean side of a maximum power AFR).

For the record, 4x4's come with the thicker walled , RS500 spec block (aka 200 block) a revised head, different cam profiles and a specially developed exhaust manifold. The turbo, although a T3, was also reworked and has different internals to the 2wd version and this allows the 4x4 to spool up quicker with less lag. 4x4's dont require turbo dampers and the loom is a two piece item. The ecu in a 4x4 is an L8 which can hold twice the information that a 2wd L6 unit is capable of holding. The intercooler is larger than the 2wd version and the 4x4 uses a different gearbox to the 2wd borg warner unit. 4X4's also come fitted with dark blue injectors as opposed to the 2wd's yellows. Early 4x4's were redtops with no catalyst fitted and later ones are greentops with catalysts, also 4x4's have strengthened inner wings, all other sierras, including the 2wd's, do not

Well there you go, you learn something knew every day, Catalysts were only fitted to saf 4x4's from 1992 on, so G, H and J plate 4x4's come with redtop non-cat cossie engines whilst some late J's, K and L reg 4x4's are fitted with the catalyst, lambda sensored, greentop cossie engine. Mine is a J plate and has one of the last pre-cat redtop's
