Default Towing a ford Smax on a trailer.

I am looking at buying a written off S Max and need to get it back to the Isle of Wight. I have a 3500 twin axel trailer and ford ranger pick up. I have taken the trailer licence as I passed after 1997. But will an s Max be to much fora trailer towed by a 2004 ranger??
Thanks.

Be best looking in the owners hand book mate. It will have it in there.

As long as the ranger and the trailer weighs more than the Smax it should be ok. I can try and find out the weights of the cars if you want.

Aslong as the combined weight of the full rig doesn't weigh more then 3500kg you should be fine. If it did you'd need a class 3 licence and a tacho

Ranger and smax will be similar weghts, even if its within legal weights it maybe better with something heavier than a ranger. Not sure why you'd need a tacho and class 3 If you have passed Your +E test.

Ford ranger 02-06
Weight and Capacities
Gross Train Weight5645
Gross Vehicle Weight2845
Max. Towing Weight - Braked2800
Max. Towing Weight - Unbraked750

From that as long as the smax and trailer is under 2800 kg you should be fine.

Passing your trailer test in a car just means you can tow over 750kg and up to 3500kg i believe, aslong as the vehicle is plated to tow up to 3500kg. And yes you wouldn't need a tacho if its not for hire or reward

B+E is not restricted to 3500kg.

Even on a B only you can tow over 750kg, BUT the PLATED max weights (not actual) of the vehicle and trailer can only add upto 3500kg.

Category B+E

You can drive a vehicle with a*MAM*of 3,500kg with a trailer.

The size of the trailer depends on when you passed your test. If you passed your test:

before 19 January 2013 you can tow any size traileron or after 19 January 2013 you can tow a trailer with a*MAM*of up to 3,500kg

Copied from the government website.

So if you passed your test after 19th Jan 2013 your limited to a 3500kg trailer behind a suitable 3500kg vehicle.

Before that date your trailer can be heavier. (which is unlikely anyway)

Its been debated thousands of times on various forums, it has also been proven that the direct.gov website is misleading.
