Default cam for Inj cvh or carb ???

Hey all, another stupid question from the muppet. I have a 1.6 cvh injection engine from a mk5 escort witch I am putting in my mk2 fiesta. I am buying twin carbs for this engine. But one thing I am not sure on is, I need a new cam so I thought I would get a performance one, how ever I do not know if I need a injection cam or a carb cam? As I engine is originally injection but will be on carbs?! Or is there no real difference??!!

Cheers all

The cvh out of your mk5 escort will probably be a lean burn engine and don't respond well to tuning. Best to get an early 1.6 cvh head from a mk3 xr3 or 3i, these are the best heads and can be identified by the crosshatch casting marks on the side of the head. I would fit a fast road cam for carbs if running webbers or dellortos.

Ok mate, I actually do have a mk4 xr3i head so can I use that? And I have been looking on burton for a cam and any are for a injection engine, but I am converting a injection engine to carbs, so can I still use a injection cam?

The mk4 3i head will be fine. Best bet is to get in touch with burtons and see what they say about the cam.

Newman seem to have a good rep with cams these days, have a look and see if they list a few for the CVH engine, but make sure you stick with a fast road profile and not an out and out race one.

The engine in the mk5 Injected Escort, if a 1.6, will be the EFI CVH. These are the best heads they did for the CVH and are much better than the lean burn and early hemi heads. Ford actually did some work to improve power and even fitted wasted valves. So keep the efi head, blank off the injector cut outs when fitting your carbs and I would use a performance carb cam.

Also to add, if it is a lean burn engine, do not put a hemi head on it. The compression ratio will be too low and it will be gutless up to around 3500 revs. Keep hemi head with hemi bottom end and lean burn with lean burn.
