Default Remapping N/A cars. Gains to be had?

Just been reading through a post on Pistonheads- http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/t...g%20n/a%20cars

Quite a lot of different views on the matter. What is peoples views on N/A remaps? Can extra BHP be had or is it purely drive-ability?? Lots of conflicting views it seems!

only ever had 1 N/A car remapped, there was a small again in BHP but it was more responsive which made for a better drive.

Marginal tbh, like in the under 5% territory. More if you have changed engine spec (cam, exhaust etc) where the original map becomes sub optimal. IMO Any gains come from the reduction of manufacturer safety margins (for ignition advance) and from ignoring emission laws which the manufacturer would have to comply to.

As has been mentioned, throttle response is where you'll pick up the most notable gains, you won't find many extra ponies without more work like cams etc.

i've only had my e46 330ci remapped and the difference was fantastic.
it wasn't much faster, only a 15bhp increase, but response and sound was so much better.
really changed how it drove big time, remember the bhp won't move much, unlike both the turbo diesels, e90 330d being very quick afterwards for a tractor.
