Apologies for asking about such a terrible car, but I'm looking for some advice re: a 56 plate 1.4 petrol 207.

Last week my partner was out in the car when it started when a loud noise appeared, she was along way from home and immediately took it to the nearest garage where they diagnosed it as being the cambelt tensioner that was failing.

They advised not driving any further to prevent any damage so she booked it in to have the cambelt and tensioner replaced, as part of this work they have also replaced the water pump.

The car was delivered back to us and immediately I noticed the car was running roughly, on start up the idle was immediately at 1500rpm and it rose to 1700rpm by itself in the course of about 30 seconds. Pops and crackles could be heard from the exhaust and although the revs were not fluctuating up and down, it seemed to be running badly.

I rejected the car and they took it back, they then claimed it was a VVT issue and they had cleared a fault code and taken it for a 12 mile test drive.

When it was returned again it was exactly the same so they took it back again, this time they claimed they needed a peugeot specialist to reset the ecu properly and after a couple more days rang to say they had had it sorted and also found a loose belt?

Today it was returned for a third time and it seemed to be idling alot better (around 900rpm) but there still seemed to be some slight rough running at idle. I said I would see how it went and turned off the car. This evening I decided to give it a run out and on starting the car, the rough running seemed a little worse and the rpm's were closer to 1000, then a depollution warning popped up along with the engine warning light.

Can anyone shed any light on this, does the garages course of action seem to make sense or have they just lowered the idle rpm somehow and not fixed whatever the issue is. Could anything they have done have caused this issue?

My mate had similar and the timing was out by one tooth

 

I did wonder if it could be a tooth out, I did see a mention of that when iw as googling the VVT issue the other day, cheers Caddyshack.

 

deffo timing out, that will be why it put a vvt fault up and cause the rough running. i would expect any garage to be able to do a timing belt on one of those engines even an apprentice should not be able to fuck it up to be honest so i would be wary of the garage tbh

Cut your losses and take it to a garage you trust to have the timing checked. I would have thought however the garage that did the work would have checked and double checked it though after the faults appeared.

 

Thanks, the garage is a dealership who's well known locally and sells a few different marques so im quite surprised that theyve made such a mess of it.

 

As a fellow 207 owner I'd say scrap the fucker. As a fellow PassionForder I'd concur with the timing being a tooth out.

 

Is this a 16v or 8v?
16 I'm guessing as you mentioned vvt
Was it fine before?
If so 100% timing is wrong.
These are really simple to time up so I would def take it else where mate

Yeah, 16v, we gave them one last chance to sort it and they have done, it was a tooth out as you all advised.

 

Glad to hear u got it sorted. It amazes me to this day some of the monkeys that are allowed to work on cars. Someone should be sacked after letting u have the car back like that. Soon as the mechanic fired it up he should have know something was wrong. Perhaps these so called "technicians" should stick to clean jobs like electrical faults and leave the nuts and bolts to us mechanics
