Default Automatics and snow!

Been thinking here as some of you know I bought a MK3 Mondeo 2.5 V6 Auto the other week due to me needing physio on my left leg.

I have been driving since I was 17 and am now 41 and this is the only auto I have ever owned!

If we get snow this winter how are you meant to drive them, may sound such a thick question but in snow I have always used clutch control when the car starts to spin the front wheels.

Any tips?

Again, sorry if it sounds a bit of a stupid question, just thinking earlier about it.....Tooooo much time on my hands

Start off in a higher gear, you can normally knock them in to 2nd or 3rd but gentle throttle will be fine in normal use. If really worried then buy winter tyres, they are amazing.

Last car I had in the snow that was auto was a c36 amg Merc. Didn't need to drive it any different at all. Just put it in drive and let it move off on its own then once going just drive as normal taking into account its slippery as Fook lol

Auto will be far easier and better in the snow than a manual.

And as above, if you're really that concerned, buy 4 snow/winter tyres. They really do make a big difference.

auto's tend to creap upto 3-4mpg when you take the gas off, its a great thing in slippery conditions as it gets you that little bit of momentum

Auto is a doddle in the snow, foot off the gas and it will just gently pull itself away then drive as normal. Loved my Audi for it, people spinning and sliding doing hill stairs and I just waft off in comfort haha.

Thanks for the replies!

Just watched a Youtube clip about Winter tyres, they seem to make a huge difference, would never have thought they would make such difference though.

My discovery 3 is an auto, wouldn't have it any other way and as said they creep when you let the foot off the brake, perfect in ice and snow

Obviously if its pure ice, black ice etc, you're still fucked.

But auto is always better, and winter tyres really do make a huge difference, especially in snow.

Just keep in mind how much snow we get in the south, a few days?? decent normal tyres and take it steady and no problem. Better than buying winter tyres for a bit if slush.

Auto's in the snow are so much better than manuals. We had some shitty (for the south) snow 3 years ago or so and my cranky old 328i auto was going up slopes that Mercedes ML's couldn't.

I now have a set of snow tyres which have been waiting for snow for the last 2 years
