Hi all not been on here in a while dont own a Ford anymore, long story but this car ive got now with the engine in the title, its done 175,000 miles and theres a rattle coming from the right hand side of the engine near the cam cover, seems to be coming from this metal box bolted to the side of the head which i now know is the tandem pump. I believe this is for the fuel pump and something vac related to do with the brakes?
Now it drives fine, its a bit flat below 2500 revs, when its cold and you start it it sounds really clattery for the first 10 - 15 seconds but if you rev it it clears
The brakes are brilliant on it either, pads and that all look new its been well looked after, but im constantly feeling the ABS kicking in where the pedal goes hard and rumbles under your foot?
Just wondering if these problems are linked to the rattling tandem pump, and even if tandem pumps do rattle, what causes the rattle? and finally are they easy to change?
Thanks

I've changed two tandem pumps. Both within two weeks of eachother. One on a Passat 2.0TDi and the other an Audi A3 2.0TDi.
One engine had a rattle like yours, the other was rattling and dumping oil into the fuel.
We bought cheap ones from ebay and they're still going well 2 years later!
Not a hard job at all. Hour at most!

Thats good then, someone told me the timing would need to be adjusted, another told me the brakes would need bleeding, im not entirely sure what this pump does other than its something to do with the fuel system. Im gonna check the colour of the fuel in the filter housing before i change it, it did come with a gallon of oil in the boot half used which i didnt find till i got it home, but only paid Ł1500 for it , 07 reg passat sport tdi
cheers

Pop the fuel filter out and have a look. If it's dumping oil into the fuel you will see it all gunged up in the filter.
Only other thing, the car that was dumping oil into the fuel had lift pump failure a few weeks after, probably caused by the oil.
