Hey guys, just bought a 03 fiesta as a project, sold with crunching second gear.

Any ideas if this is syncro/box related?

I can get a new box for £60 so I was going to drop one in but not sure if it could be anything else?

Apparently it's a common issue so I'm driving it until it breaks

 

Sounds like a new gearbox and protect it with Shockproof oil from OPIE oils.

 

Could also be slack gear selection cables but I would expect it to crunch going in to other gears as well.

 

Mine does it a bit when going into first while moving and also into second in winter before the gearbox has warmed up. Probably a worn synchro on second - have you tried rev matching or double de-clutching to see if that reduces the crunching? ...might help the box last a bit longer too

try renewing gearbox oil for a good quality semi synth gear oil,

common fix for mitsi evo and vw boxes,
