Default boost, actuator question.

Hi,

So my project car is coming to the end. I got an mot. But I noticed that it was running very low boost. 0.2 bar.

I put in the bleed valve...no matter what I done...It still stays at 0.2 bar....

So I decided to take the vacuum pipe off of the actuator to see what happen...

It boosts up fine but I was letting off at 0.7 bar. (This boost pressure if fine for my spec)

Question is... If I leave the pipe off. What's the max psi it will hit?

Am I right in thinking that 12 psi is what it will go to with it closed like this? And that a standard actuator only hits over this with a bleed valve put in.

And that a -31 would run 1 bar without the need for a bleed valve?

Thanks

Am sure if you leave the pipe off the actuator you will get max boost for the turbo so be carful. It all depends what set up your running do you still have a boost limiter ? Is it superchipped ? Also how have you set up your actuator

No boost limiter.

Never set it up, came with another turbo I had. Just bolted it on.

I'm sure it was only reaching 0.7bar with it off?

Am sure with the pipe off the actuator you should get mad boost as there is nothing there to allow the boost to dump. Have a look at the actuator see how much tension there is on the rod I have mine just over half a hole past the wastgate pin

If there is no hose on the actuator then the waste gate will stay closed and you will boost until the turbo over speeds and destroys itself along with the engine! lol
Sounds like a boost leak, the actuator springs is weak, or you do not have enough pre-load?

See here if you are unsure of how to set the correct pre-load...

Well its only boosting to 0m5 bar with it blanked off.....?

So by blanking it off...does it max the turbo? Constantly carry on boosting up...or does it max boost of the actuator. Trying to find out what's wrong and what's needed

You have an actuator fault or boost leak

Also, run a pipe directly from the compressor housing to the actuator, see what you get there. If you still have an AMAL valve it may be goosed and the short direct pipe will bypass it. Also sounds like weak preload.

No amal valve. Think its still o.2 bar with pipe on from turbo to actuator.

Unsure what that means though

Have you checked your actuator

I have. I have been asking around but no one seems to be able to explain the actuator and so on.

I ended up checking the actuator...A -22 standard one. Preload was set fine. The pipe wasn't loose on it when pulling. Tight.

So I got a -31 off my mate. It was set to same preload...and was boosting 7psi strait away. Bleed valve was opened and was messing about to see boost rise and it did to 9psi before my bonnet cable snapped and I couldn't be bothered to finish testing. It was however spiking to around 12 psi and leveling out to 9...?

So why does a -31 actuator work better than a -22 if you are going to use a bleed valve? I don't understand this and can't find an answer.

Thanks

the 31 has a stronger rate therefore it will hold boost better, 1 bar i think a -31. it sounds like the old actuator was knackered allowing the w/g to open prematurelly half a hole over the waste gate arm is typical as a starting point then adjust accordingly. looser/longer will reduce the preload and lower the boost level, shortening the rod will do the opposite

Right, no matter how much I bleed the valve...It only goes up to 0.6 bar....??

Boost leak somewhere or a knackered turbo perhaps?

That's what I'm thinking. Would probably hear an air leak though. Il check it out

does the new actuator have a bit of preload on it?

Yes, there will be nothing to open the waste gate so the turbo would just keep spooling, if there is no boost/vac hose to the actuator it will do nothing.

So yes either a boost leak, knackered turbo, or maybe the turbo isn't big enough, you don't mention your engine spec or turbo etc?
