Cat d shouldn't have lost it's log book. Only if it's cat c and needs a Vic check then you have to apply for a new one.
If it's been lost or something and you apply for one in your name I think the dvla will contact the current registered keeper to confirm the change before they issue a new v5 in your name.

just make sure you put the correct dates you took the car over otherwise you will be accountable for anything prior to that.

Who are you buying it from and why don't they have the log book?

As a cat d the current keeper should still have it.

I've bought loads and loads of Cat D cars (in their damaged state) and the V5 is never present.

If the car has been repaired and returned to the road then it's just like buying any other car and the V5 will be with the registered keeper.
