I just changed my oil filter housing on my mondeo xr5, as I was raising the rad back into place a pipe cracked and started hissing, the mist is BRIGHT green so I assume it is coolant, though mine is red in the reservoir. I can see the leak, can anyone tell me what part I nee? I Know the picture is poor, but if anyone could let me know if it is doable on the floor of the garage that would be grand.



It is to the left of the engine bay and sprays, onto the radiator, from the green bit to the left centre of the shot, will get a better picture tomorrow when it is lighter.

Any help would be appreciated, she is costing a fortune this month!

 

Think that might be an air con leak...?

Tell me you don't have air con and I'll get me coat!

 

My first thought was aircon but wasn't sure if it would leak like that, guess I thought it would be clear gas. The pipe does appear to be aluminium and it was under some pressure even though the car has not moved all day. I would be happier with an air con leak than a coolant leak that's for sure.

 

air con gas will have a almost flourescent green oil in it to lubricate the pump and will hiss as under pressure, coolant on these will be red if not tampered with and would be under very little pressure with the engine off

 

It'll be the air con oil spraying out as it'll have been sat in a connector waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting mechanic

Power steering fluid is also green, however it wouldn't be under pressure with the engine not running.

 

Yeah, and this stuff is like predators blood green

 

it's luminous green right? that's the ac stuff

fire up the car and turn the ac on and see if it comes on (or the ac actually works at all)

but now i've seen the pic it's deffo the ac pipe, it's the one that goes to the reciver/drier by the looks of it and if you get an aftermarket replacement they don't tend to line up in the holes that ford have made for them so it's better to go original (but they are 4x the price)

 

You'll get someone to fix that with a Vulcan lokring fitting,we use them all the time,an a/c specialist will have them.if u need other info on them let me kno

 

Well that is good news, it is right on the bend, will that make a difference?

 

Depends on which pipe it is as one can be replaced and some can't in their own

Remove the undertray and you should be able to see all the connecting bits and if they have bolt/but fittings on both ends it'll be easy

 

There's a new thing on the market called a splice lock fitting and you cut the Ali tube with a pipe cutters and put this fitting on with spanners not a crimping tool like the Vulcan lokring one so less space is required.the bend can be cut out and replaced easily

 

Access is the issue here. Although you can remove the pipe to fit the fitting and then replace it how will you know the bend is correct?
Or is it flex able ?

 

Sorry, I've been away.
It looks like a rigid pipe and access is terrible. I might have to throw in the towel with this one and get a specialist to do it. Mainly because I don't want to go cracking pipes left right and centre while fixing this one, it took barely anything to cause this. It's been baking in the car without the aircon though so it needs fixing. Thanks everyone for your input.
