Default Jaguar X types?

I have a mk3 facelift Mondeo as a temporary runabout and been thinking about chopping it in for an X type. Anybody have one or any experience of them? Might be a daft idea but the mrs says I'm full of those.

Plenty of these about for very cheap money, sills can rust, parts are pretty easy to obtain. A magazine I read have just picked a diesel up as a project.

Nice cars, I would have one no bother.

The X type is very much based on the MK3 Mondeo tbh you probably wont find much difference other than to look at them

I'm aware they are very similar and indeed even share some part. Part of the thinking behind it on all honesty. Be nicer to park a Jag at work as opposed to a Mondeo. LoL

The X-type diesel sport in black look very nice. Mondeo ST TDCI preformance but with classier looks. I'd have one.

if its economy then just stick with the mondeo.

The x type 3.0 V6 awd manual is fairly nippy and on par with an st220, plus in winter you will be unstoppable.

The x type is a rich mans mondeo lol, same chassis and drivetrain.
I don't like them, I much prefer the poor mans jag, mondeo!

My mates inlaws have a 2.5 manual AWD one and it drives fucking horrible!

Having said that it isn't the best of examples and I haven't driven another X type so it may just be that it's a shit one. I have driven a lot of mk3 Mondeos though and they have all been nicer to drive.

One of our old contractors had the AWD manual version and when the clutch went he was quoted silly money by Jag and they insisted they were the only ones with a tool to do the job. All the indys he tried wouldn't touch it either citing the same reason. This was about 7yrs ago now so I'm sure this has changed.

My mate is a tester and he failed one recently for the sills being completely gone. Think it was a 02 plate - looked fine til you could see in behind the skirts. Other than that it was a half decent motor but ended up getting scrapped.

Would the x-type 4wd system fit a mk3 mondeo?

My dads jag x type needed a clutch doing cause the slave cylinder failed. Some back street garage did it for him. The next day it wouldn't start. They forgot to tighten the earth strap up on the gearbox lol.

I've got plenty of experience of X-Types as I had a new one back in 2003 and then bought a fleet of them for the company. Mine was a 2.5 SE AWD Saloon, then had a 3.0. The fleet was made up of the FWD Diesel models.

Really nice cars. Yes, they were based on the Mondeo, but lots of little changes and upgrades added up to a vastly superior car which drives so much better.

Really good 4wd system. Nothing fancy, just works well. I was up high in the Welsh Mountains Christmas Day 2005 in mine when the snow suddenly came down thick and fast and the car was superb to be honest.

They were good cars, but never really thought I'd have another since I got rid of my last one in 2007, but then last November I was on the lookout for an estate car as I'd got nothing really suitable for 4 people or taking to the tip without a permit and general runabout/workhorse. I'd sold my Range Rover as I was bored of big 4x4s, so I looked at X Type Estates. There were far too many dogs about and went off the idea as thought I'd always compare an X-Type to my last one, which was virtually new at the time. Started looking at BMW Tourings instead and thought I'd just live without the 4wd, but soooo many BMW's get run into the ground and not looked after too, when I came across an excellent early 2005 X-Type 2.5 Sport AWD Estate, so I snapped that up and it's been great. I was ideally looking for a 3.0, but the 2.5 goes well enough and is pretty economical.

I've racked up a fair few miles in it in a few months and I've loved it. It's fully loaded bar Sat Nav. Sure it doesn't feel as special as my old X350 4.2 XJ8, so in some ways it's not a "proper" Jag, but still a very nice car to drive and live with. And the estate is a useful bit of kit, especially in AWD form. And it's a good stablemate for my 5.0 XKR.

I'd recommend one to anyone and whilst my X-Type was towards the top end of what you'll pay for one, even at that they're awesome value.
