Now then chaps its been a few years, a few scoobies and an audi a6 since i last posted here.
My old man has a mk6 tranny, a 2002 2.0 duratorq tdi
It cut out on him at a roundabout yesterday, AA tow him home, and say its the fuel pump. We changed the filter today, filling it up with diesel, and using a bit of easy start, she fired up and ran for about 10/15 min. Problem solved, or so we thought.
Turned her off, and she started fine, but After leaving her for a half hour she wont start, just turns and turns. So we took the filter off which was now empty, and topped it up, abit of easy start and away she went again, but still, once shes left for a little while she wont start.
Does it sound like fuel pump?

When I brought my 2005 transit, I had the same issues. Took it back to the garage and they changed the filter and said it was draining back. Got it back and still had the same issue. Mine would struggle to start in a morning but once warm was ok for a while but gradually got worse.
I spoke to a Ford technician who knew straight away what it was. He said it was the timing belt/chain.
He replaced it but also had to change the cover too. This cured it and been good since.
