as above guys would a 500 cooler make a big difference in lag over the standard 3dr intercooler with the standard turbo?

 

Not really needed James tbh, but if you did fit one it wouldn't be hugely noticeable, I've had both setups.

Pretty sure i,m right in saying if running high boost and the little t3 is spinning its nuts off then it will produce a fair bit of heat and warrant a better cooler. Personally I would take more lag for cooler charge temps.

 

Last year I changed my 4x4 cooler to the RS500 style cooler and I noticed the lag increased noticebly. It's quite logical though, the volume to pressurize is a lot more, so hence it takes longer.

For the tiny volume of air that an intercooler holds compared to the massive amount the engine digests I'd suggest the lag will in truth be minimal imo.

There is a reasonably noticable difference between a std 2wd cooler and a RS500 style one when using a std T3. The response and lag is better with the 2wd cooler, so I'd say better to stick with the std cooler as long as you are'nt running more than around 20psi.

Obviously if you are running the T3 very hard, the charge temps can get quite high with the 2wd item so an Rs500 item would be better in that instance, but personally Id rather have the better response of the 2wd cooler and little lower boost. Overall more pleasant to drive.

 

I have an old 4x4 one sitting here if you want to try one.

 

Mine had the standard t3 and cooler running greens when i bought the car. One of the first mods i did was change to a 500 style cooler.

I have dyno printouts from before and after done on the same rollers but obviously on different days and it gained 25lb/ft of torque, power stayed the same.

Didn't really notice it having more lag?

If you don't want the 500 cooler definitely use a 4x4 over the tiny 2wd

the car in question is only stage one sunday driver ,so he just wants a nice punchy driver but nothing over the top
