The seals have gone in the t3 on my series one so I'm in need of a new turbo now. I assume the engine is standard but I want to breath a bit of life into it. I've heard that a 4x4 cosworth t3 is a good upgrade so was looking to buy one of them. What is the limit of the standard head gasket? Do you think it's worth fitting an uprated one for peace of mind or is there anyway of knowing if it already has an uprated one? Also I was thinking of fitting a uprated camshaft but what one would you recommend as I used to run 285t2 years ago but done a search and can't find any forsale anywhere

Always good to upgrade IMO, I believe the cam everyone loves these days is a newman.

As already said Newman cams are the best of the bunch for the cvh engine.

The standard Ford head gasket (Payen) has been used for 300bhp+

Have a word with Wilky on here (Bernies Blowers on facebook) He is great with turbo repairs/upgrades.

 

If you do decide to go for a 4x4 Cossie turbo it is similar spec to a stage 3 upgrade on a RS Turbo T3 but you will need to work out the housing on it (e.g whether the rst one will fit) but deffo a good upgrade

 

My car has the following spec turbo from CR Turbos (a TSF02) although I hear Wilky is the man to see for a turbo:

2WD Cosworth compressor housing
55 AR compressor wheel
360 degree ball bearing
-31 actuator.

At least on my engine and the road it actually makes the engine a lovely setup, far more usable than my last car if I am honest (a 944 Turbo with the larger turbo from the factory; that was very flat until over 3,000RPM where the turbo literally came in with some force and as if it was on a switch!).

That last note is pretty important. Bigger is not always better and the turbo in all honesty should be chosen for what you want to achieve from the car (i.e a nicer road machine or more of a screamer at the expense of drivability). Pub bragging rights are all good and well I admit but they are just that .

 

Do you have use the rs turbo exhaust housing on a 4x4 turbo or use the cossie one? I have a standard cossie down pipe lay in the shed so making a new down pipe is no problem if I need to use the cossie housing.

Chas I'm worried about it being too laggy as for the 9-10yr I've been used to a t34.63 on my saff so a 4x4 t3 on a rst will feel like no lag compared to the saff

 

4x4 Will be laggy like a Stage 3 T3, if your engine is otherwise standard and MFI then I'd go with a stage 2 and nothing more mate.

 

Did you get sorted with your turbo, im in the same boat now lol, oil seal has gone bloody thing
