Default S2 speedo & ABS

Hello all, just after a few pointers please - I have an 89 S2 with ABS, went out in the car Monday and the speedo stopped working, also noticed thar the ABS light is now illuminated with the handbrake off.
Could these 2 issues be related or is it just flukey bad luck?*
As my car has ABS I have read that the speedo cable is in 2 parts to attach the ABS - any ideas? What is the most common thing to fail and how easy to replace?
Many thanks,
Darren

abs light illuminates if a belt breaks, each driveshaft runs a belt,
chances are a belt has snapped, there is a switch on each belt cover plate,
switch lifts out easy, just tension on a plastic lever and it lifts free,
carefull of the stainless lever arm connected to switch,
these can drop off, inside the cover, if ham fisted.
feel in the hole for a belt, or use a flashlight,,
belt goes over the driveshaft, not a 10 minute job, but do-able,

speedo cable could have simply come off , behind the clocks, , 2 piece speedo cable is easy to disconnect at gearbox end , or split both parts
fix the cable end in a drill and spin, drill forwards(clockwise) observe dash
,
testing gearbox drive gear , >> lift road wheels off the ground, insert a small screwdriver or allen key, in the speedo output on the gearbox, place in 2nd gear, with engine running, watch for it to turn ,
the drive gear is nylon and can strip its gears ,
trusty Haynes manual is very usefull ,

ABS is all good now - the sensor switch had worked loose! Just need to sort the speedo now.
