Default standard cam with hydraulic lifters

right this is a refresh of a previous post with new thoughts

spoke to steve at Jamsport, he is able to get me a standard solid cam made by Newman and hydraulic lifters for my spec of car. Which is totally standard, so will be like factory, apparently

Anyone done this before? what Newman cam is it? Does it last??

all help greatly appreciated

Newman cams will be the best of what you can get. They'll just make a copy of the original, so standard profiles. It may not even have a part number.

I've driven past Newman cams on the A21 numerous times. It just looks like a small machine shop, but they are highly regarded for what they do.

Don't expect it to be cheap though.

why bother with high costs of a decent cam without having any advantages over what you have. Also newman, kent, piper etc don't make hydraulic lifters. Where do you think they come from?

Even an off the shelf mild road cam would be fine if you wanted to stick around standard power. By the time you dialled it in and set the cam properly with std parts you probly wouldn't see much gain anyway maybe a few bhp but still drive the same.

Why not get a slightly larger intercooler paint it black so you don't notice it. Fit a chip if it doesn't have one and then the mild cam will make it a bit more lively and still look stock under the bonnet.

hello fella
what mild road cam would you suggest then if its existing rather than having one made up?

just at revs 4k and above its a bit rattly like nails, maybe its like that normally not sure, also gears in first and second when revving a little bit rattly nothing major

What's important to mention here is that the engine has done 177k miles and is untouched, I wouldn't recommend upping the power.... I would recommend a full rebuild if money allows, if not then just a replacement cam, Newman is the best of what's available IME, you could risk a cheap Motor factors replacement but if it falls apart and then writes off what's left of your bottom end it's money wasted, albeit not much! lol
