Default General turbo related questions

Hi all,

Looking for a t3 turbo for my metro turbo engine build, and have seen a few but they are described as having shaft play. Now I know if the shaft has play side to side (looking at it from the end) and it touches the housing it's scrap. But how much back and fourth is acceptable? Is there any tolerance for this or is a little OK?

And if I get the turbo, I'd like for it to be freshened up, so was wondering if there are any people out there who come recomended, or can I do it? As I'm sure between me and my dad, if it doesn't require specialist expensive tools we might be able to do it ourselves maybe? Or best left to the pros who have the right tools and ways to measure the tolerances etc? DO garrett have any departments who will refurb their old turbos?

Thanks in advance

I wouldnt bother trying to do it yourself, certain parts will need balancing etc if its not done properly you run the risk of ruining the turbo and possibly the engine aswell, Midland Turbo in Nottingham re-built mine for me and has been spot on 3 years later going strong

Me and my old man rebuilt my t34. It had quite a lot of shaft play and smoked a fair bit. Cost about £100 in bits 360 degree degree kit with new journal bearings & staggered rear seal various gaskets, new studs and nuts. had to buy some mini circlip pliers. Took us a whole day to make a good job of it.

Running for 12+ months now holding 21psi and all seems fine. -- (probably go bang next week now)

I'd say have a go if your pretty handy with the tools

Sounds good. Dependant on price I'd be tempted to DIY it, but might give it to a specialist if it's not much more
