Afternoon folks
After working my way up the Ford ladder and now Uni has finished, its time for an S2 Turbo! Just wondering how reliable these can be if taken care of (i.e regular oil changes, letting turbo warm up & cool down) and what they are like on petrol? I've got a mate who has had loads of them so he is gonna check running gear out and I can go over bodywork etc. Anything else to look for? Thing is i've only got a budget of about £1800 so I don't expect too get a show-winner, just hoping for an honest, original RS!!
Cheers for any help

Depends on a few things, make sure you get a clean one to start with. I think the budget of £1800 is realistic and you sound like someone that will look after your first RS
Common sense will see your RS last, regular servicing and oil changes will help but expect the unexpected like with any Ford RS they have a habit of letting you down when your skint lol but luckily if you stick with PF there are so many people with experience of Series 2's that most of your problems will be solved/sorted cheaply as long as you don't mind getting your hands dirty!
As far as looking for problems take a friend for deffo and just check everything spend some time and ask loads of questions to the owner about everything. You can usally tell if the owner gave a shite about the car just by presentation. Make sure you view the RS's in daylight aswell and not petrol station lighting. Also don't travel far unless your 110% sure its going to suit your requirements as I can speak personally of some wasted journies for 'mint' cars that turn out to be shitters, also there are a lot of shitters so don't get disheartened if the first load you see are crap.
Good luck and don't forget to post pics when you buy it

Check the underneath wiv a fine tooth comb. Ive seen a few what look mint on the top & completely rotten underneatn. eg, sills, boot, front strut, everything. Im finding more rust spots every week since ive owned mine. I'll be getting another for the summer, but gonna make sure its a minter. One slight bit of rust & im walking. You'll be surprised what you can pick up wiv £1800. Just be patient.
good sound advice. those arches can be very decieving. get your fingers everywhere behind them arches! i made the mistahe once.
looked mint, and turned out i was doing a full set of inner and outer arches on it.
its amazing what some people can do with filler there days! take your magnet with you.!!!!!!!

Hi mate, saw this on the Shoutbox on PF Home Page, might be worth a look.
The ERST is at your budget but could be ok, and that seems a bloody good price for an FRST if its in good nick!

Thats alright dude, your welcome!
Did you ever find that Recaro interior that you were after for the XR3i BTW?
Is there any mileage in turbo'ing the XR3i mate, or are you like me and will always have it at the back of your mind its not a real 'RS'?
I'll keep and eye for you mate, grey ones do look good but not as nice as red mind!

Hmmm fuel could be an issue then - how are they when they are fairly standard and just being booted occassionally?
after a few mods (stg 1 165bhp@14psi) i was getting about 60 to 65 miles for the same 10 quids worth of juice now i'm running a 180 bhp 1.8 zvh and can care less as once the turbo bug bite gets a hold you cant stop!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm now about to fit a 2.1 zvh with a gas flowed head, piper cam and fuel costs are now long forgotten as its the buzz thats takes over and after all there plenty of loan companies willing to help out.
Besides i could sell a kidney on the black market and maybe look at fitting a 2.3 with gallons to the mile not mile to the gallon
if the xr is straight, why not do a transplant. better the devil you know.........
i looked at plenty that were more than 1800 quid and they were nice cars but i had people saying a minter was a car with only several bits of welding done.........
1800 will not get you a car without rust or a car that hasnt had rust problems. you may find a mint one where the owner doesnt know what its worth and thinks its just an old escort but theyll be few and far between.
im sorry to be negative but there is too much crap around now. too many people thinking that the RS badge means the car is invincible, its NOT!
but good luck none-the-less, i hope you find a good one.

Cheers guys - afraid the XR3i in my siggy is long gone, fookin rotten beyond belief but its being re-shelled into a minter Bonus (see resto bits) but think it'll be running a Zetec on carbs.
Its not the RS badge on the log book that bothers me really, just in a position now where I can buy one and enjoy rather than having to build one and to be honest because i've got the Bonus project and that I don't need a total minter of a Turbo - as long as its clean to look at and reliable

I personally think that you can pick up straight S2's for £1800 quid mate, but there gonna be high mileage and will probably need work in the long run to keep them no the road
Perhaps save up another £700 or something to give you a budget of £2500 and you should find a really nice example for that money, may even have a couple of mods done, like filter, exhaust etc

Got it on Saturday, E plate red S2, its totally standard except for the induction kit, dump valve and full stainless, 90 spec interior and clear indicators - Just what I wanted! Boy had it advertised for £1250 but said he'd take £1k, when I went to view the car he said the fuel pump was goosed and to make him an offer if I wanted it - offered him £550 and towed the car home. Tried to start it, heard the fuel pump prime and thought wait a min, put petrol in her and she fired up as sweet as a nut!!!!!!! Jammy or what!!
Car is mot'd till Oct, taxed till end of Sept, four brand new tyres, new wheel bearings etc will get some pics up soon!

So you've got a good clean RST for £550 then mate!
Pleased for you, i'm starting to think about a Series 2 over a Series 1 for a short-term fix, just whilst my money's gonna be saved up

Just out of curiousity, i stripped interior out and lifted carpet out tonight to see what i was up against, turns out floor is pretty damn solid on her bar two very small holes where the bulkhead meets the floor (no problem to my welder Chiz!) so i'm happy - half expected it to be rotten!!
Speakin of which anyone wanna swop me a mint 88 spec interior for the mint 90 spec thats in it??
