Aside from wheels being balanced, is there any other issues that can cause this?

I keep getting steering wheel wobble around 55-65mph.

 

I had this problem as well when I got the car, but I had bad tyres and bent rims. After I got the new tyres I still had a constant vibration only from about 55 to about 65 mph, so then I decided to get some new rims. Now I got the new rims as well and only sometimes I still have a slight vibration when going at that same speed, and sometimes I have a pretty bad vibration when braking. Next thing I'll try to do is to get some new brakes... When I got the first wheel alignment check I also found out I needed new track control arms so I got them as well.

if you have spacer look about your nuts if they are long enough

 

What about the drive shaft?

I run spacers on the rear but have a stud conversion with more than 14 full turns on the nuts.

 

It's going for an MOT today so I'll get them to have a look.

 

Well the car sailed through its MOT and they had a good look, prod and wiggle and said that everything suspension wise is nice and tight. They said with the symptoms I'm describing it might be worth getting the wheels re-balanced.

 

If they didn't have shaker plates though it may not have shown, they are pretty brutal things. They show things up that a manual test lane wouldn't.

Similar to above my work mate had a knock on his mk1 capri, could never find it, they had a atl installed at the depot he was based at and the shaker plates shown the fault straight away.

 

I shall have to find out if there is anyone with one local to me.

 

Well I'm stumped. Had the ablance on the wheels checked, put new bushes in the steering column, had it on a shaker plate which showed no wear up front.

Yet still got steering wheel shake at 50-60mph and under braking at the same speeds.

 

i get it, hold wheel its fine, let go of wheel between 50-80 whobbles like crazy, its not dangerous. had my wheels rebalance, swapped fronts with rears, new lower arms, new steering bushes, ploy brushed all round, i guess its just part of an old car, i can live with it.

bit like living with it ages to fill up at the petrol pump cause it keeps clicking if it goes in too fast, the fun and frustration of owning an old car

 

Had similar on my old Astra Z20LET. Turned out to be the tyres, after I replaced them the issue went away.

Pull the handle out and inch or so. It then drops and changes the angle of attack and the issue goes away.

I have this on my series 1 had new discs and pads new shocks all round wheels balance and aligned swapped front for rears swapped tca steering bush is ok and still the same problem

 

Well after having the wheels rebalanced and double checking all the mounting surfaces were spotless I went for a 30 mile drive to see a friend. Fair bit of driving at 50-70mph. The steering wheel only vibrated twice.
Once when pulling onto a dual carriageway when accelerating past 50 and for a few seconds whilst holding the car at 60mph a few miles down the road.

 

change the drive shafts, only £50 to buy but fiddling to fit, I'm getting mine done soon, maybe they are ok but at 24yrs old they could do with being replaced as they rotated and move the car
