Default Escort Mk4 1.3 OHV

Hi All,

Just joined here. Ive recently acquired a 1987 Ford EscortMK4 1.3 OHV (pre HCS) and was wondering if anyone had any advice on getting alittle bit more poke out of the engine. Swapping the engine is not an optiondue to cost and im not a speed demon but just a little bit extra would be nice.Replace carb? How much of an improvement would a K&N filter actuallyprovide? Also level of difficulty would be handy.

It’s a simple car and I really love it,just seeing what, if any options I have.

Pics to follow

Thanks all.

Hi there mate welcom to PF. If you love ford's your love it on here.

Your car sounds nice. If it was mine, I would turn it into a nice cruzer. Lowering springs, xr3 wheel's, Straight throught exhaust and a K&N.

You seem to have a prob posting pic's do you need advice.

kind regards Sam

Set up a photobucket account. Its free to use. once the piccies are on your computer, go to photobucket and hit 'upload'. Once youve selected the pics to upload it'll chuck them all onto photobucket. Select the pic you want to use, down the side are a list of 4 links you can use, right click the 2nd one down (youll see it says copied once you clicked it) then come on here, write your post, select the insert pic button and paste your pic. Job done.

Thanks chaps. Yeah its a good clean car. Rear arches need a spot of work but really love the car, runs nicely. Bit of advice if anyone has it? Swapping the VV carb with th weber will require some tuning correct? Can anyone suggest a good company that does it? Also, will he weber give it more grunt you think? Not the reason I got it but someone mentioned it might so curious. Thanks all.

The weber will make a difference. And then put a k&n on to of that. You will probhave to change manifold. Dont no where you can get it done thought. I've been thinking of doing the same on my mk2 fiesta

I don't think you need to go O.T.T with the mod's. just simple things like air filter, exhaust, lowering spring and a nice set of XR3I or RS Turbo wheels.

I agree, I like how it is and am classic ford fan so I wont go over the top, just enough in the engine area to make it run the best it can. I'm not into lowering a car but I will be throwing some alloys on it. I may have access to some cougar alloys (as in the ford cougar) may see how they look when I can afford to

Yeah im a huge fan and think the XR3I is the best looking in the MK4 for sure. COlour coded bumpers with a red strip. Just lovely!

Im having a little issue with the engine. I filled it right up, 47ltrs and after doing only 180ish miles its sitting on the red! No its not leaking and rarely smells of petrol. I don't drive it like a d**k or anything so any suggestions would be good. The fuel hose leading to the carb was originally leaking but ive replaced that its always bone dry now so not an issue there. Any advice would be great cheers guys as im damn sure theres got to be at least 250 miles to the tank. Hoping more. Cheers

Are you sure there is not a small leak??? If not could be carb not set up properly you might need to change jet's.

Default Hi All

Sorry for delay on updates but ive done a few bits listed below:

Change Fuel Filter
Change of Spark Plugs + Leads
Fitted an Alarm
Fitted Light warning alarm (goes off if you leave lights on with engine off, more a beep sound really)
Replaced Dial surround with RS one - Has space for more buttons, computer etc)

Things thatll be done over the course of this month/next month
K&N air filter
Repair rear arches - Rust has started to attack, so grind down, fibreglass and paint - until I need to cut them out anyway, may survive end of year
Still need to find a Carb guy to fit my Weber.
Rear wiper has stopped working and I bought another which doesn't either which makes me think its the Wiring to it as opposed to two motors.

Thanks all

Still not getting great fuel consumption though but perhaps faulty sender?

The last month, from full tank to now its sitting just inside the red ive done 230 miles. I would love to get at least 300 out of it to a tank but not yet.

I don't drive like a crazy fool and cant find leaks.

Any suggestions? also, anyone know any good Carb people.

Hey man, hows it going?

Currently a Ford VV, I've picked up a weber for the car, unused and still shrink wrapped, I think its the 32IBF, that needs sticking in. Doing the standard servicing plus electronics I'm good with but proper engine bits in sadly not so hot on, would love to learn.

Awesome, how is it, notice a difference in sound/performance at all? Did you find it difficult to put in. That is a coincidence. Most people replace the engine, I'm happy with the engine just not the fuel consumption, its nippy enough for me

Well mate. The 321 bf will bolt on to the std vv but you will need to buy some of that gasket card and cut out a new gasket or gasket paste. the throttle linkage is just one of one on (just dont lose any of the parts). How ever you may need to make a few bits for the choke. But that was on a fiesta you may not have to on a escort.

All in all. It's been fun to do on the fiesta.

I've spent all day finly tuning mine and it sounds a lot better than the old vv.

Good idea ditching the VV, they're utterly poo.

I also have a 1.3 Mk4, 3 door though.

Not sure whether the Weber will fit the manifold if it came with a VV, be easy to pick up a Weber manifold up though I'd of thought!
