Default Paint/body work. Blending paint in

Hi guys im just after a bit of advise. Im on sorting the rusty arches out on the ford focus. I just wanna know how I go about blending the new paint into the rear quarters without having a masking line.

This is 1 of the arches im repairing.

Primer then flatten it back and dust the 2k base coat into the quarter.

You will need to clear the whole panel unless you use neat thinners on it, not ideal outside on the street

If its a perfect or close to it match then give the area you masked a coat, then pull off the tape and then wet flat it and use mot of the surface to give it another coat then lacquer 50% more of the area

Do I have to prime the area first?

roll the tape back on itself to take away the straight edge the paint will blow under and help to avoid a solid finish line

As above or use foam edge tape on the lip on your arch and wet flat it back

Remember it's all in the prep, it take seconds to spray the coats on! if you can feel it on the fingers you will be able to see it. Wipe some panel wipe over it when your ready to go and it'll show up what it'll be like with base coat on

etch the bare metal first mate, prime then your base as said though spend time on the prep as its the biggest part of the job, use your hands and gently rub over it without looking anything you feel you will see worse, using panel wipe to give a shine will also help

Also another tip if you want perfection is use a plastic bag after prep and use it as a glove as that with take out any senses in you fingers/skin and you be able to feel any blind imperfections,

And make sure you have plenty of tea and biscuits cos you need to walk away after each coat otherwise you'll get carried away,

You may have to either use high build primer or filler to sort out the pitting round the lip as the paint will just soak into it, make sure you move the masking tape after each stage even when you role the tape as a few coats of paint will still give you a ridge

Thanks people I will hopefully put the primer on today and maybe give the car its first coat. No doubt the rust will come back but I just want the arches to be that little bit tidier.

Will I have to get some G3 to rub the paint down afterwards.

Hi Glenn, I had a scratch fixed on my daughters car at home by one of these smart repair companies . I watched the guy preparing it and he showed me what they do to blend the paint in. They use round flexible foam strips about 20mm diameter which they put around the area to be sprayed and it blends the paint in perfectly. I was amazed at the finished repair it was impossible to see where the scratch had been. I guess its because it disperses the paint better.
Whether you can buy them is another matter but I guess a place that sells paint and supplies may do.
You can never get the paint to blend in properly by using masking tape it always leaves a distinct line which you cant get rid of.
Best of luck. Talking about paint I have just had my Sapphires front and rear bumpers plus mirrors and fog light surrounds resprayed by a guy called Graham Foster near Southampton who came highly recommended by Tremona Garage. I told him I wanted it to not look obvious that they had just been resprayed and he has achieved it perfectly. He also put new rear bumper side support brackets on and it is now nice and firm with no slipping down like it used to.
I have also just had a set of Kumo Ecsta V700 medium compound track day tyres fitted and I am really impressed with the extra grip. Looking forward to some track action shortly!
Cheers Richard from Southampton.

I managed to get the primer on the car today as well as clay barring/polishing/waxing my mates ST170.

Hopefully I can get the paint on tomorrow after a wet sand the primer down a little. I doubt it will be a mint job but as long as it will look half decent I will be happy.

Fair play Glenn for having a go.

Who'd have thought that Focus's would rot like they do what with being a supposed modern Ford.

At least you haven't had to replace a sill yet like I had to do on our MK1 Focus.
