Ive known about this car for about 5 years. Its been sat on a drive locally to me since 2005, ive knocked it a few times over the years but was always told it wasn't for sale.

Knocked the other day and the fella wanted to sell it, a price was agreed and now shes mine.







Towed it home at the weekend, we got her running a few days ago. Had no power to the fuel pump, and it was also knackered. So we changed it and wired 12v to it and she fired up.



Its going to need a good service, and its got a small misfire but it runs quite nice.

Just in the process of stripping all the kit off and interior out to get an idea of how rotten she is, updates soon.

Anything can be fixed with a bit of patience and the right resources, unfortunatenly it's not cheap unless you have the right connections or expertise

Well heres the results of the rust inspection.















Also some rust in the boot floor, rear panel, rear arches and around the sunroof.

It looked a lot better than it is!!

 

Most economical thing to do is reshell it, but depends how comitted you are to fixing it I suppose.

 

Thing is if it gets re-shelled, its one less genuine cossie on the road.

That doesn't look too bad, better off welding in new metal instead of reshelling, I've seen a lot worse repaired

 

Do you have the time and patience to do it or just stick the running gear in the red hatch or the black saph. Maybe it's time to give the red hatch some love? No bias of course

 

Of course far worse have been restored, its got to be one of the worse sierras ive had for rot (and ive had 25 of them).

Found a load of rot in the rear panel and boot floor sections as well.

I will weld it all up, its what i do day in day out so its easy enough. But the sun is out at the moment and ive been too busy hooning about in my other cossie.

Il get it taken over to work during the week and start gathering panels.

 

I do have the time and patience at the moment (ish) but it will need to be fully welded up within the next couple of months as im starting my own company and after that i wont have the time.

Black saph will stay as she is, not really worth going to all that effort seeing as it comes out a couple of times a year for drift days.

Red hatch is out of sight out of mind, havent seen the car for near on two years lol

 

Got a black 2.0 ghia hach off my mate because my bros saph needed a lockset, while I was there I noticed the underneath was pretty good so I tipped it over and cut sections out of it for the saph.







Then it was time to start the welding, took my other cossie over to work to get a shot of the pair together.



Started with the rotten front wing, cut the wing off the scrap car for this

Started with the drivers floor, which was a mess due to being so bent, beat it flat and cut out and replaced the metal, also had to cut a couple of bits of the trans tunnel out.



Passenger floor pan, two bad bits on the transmission tunnel. the footwell had a few holes here and there.



But I decided to not fuck about and just replace all the metal and cut a big lump of the floor out.



That's now up to date, will try and get some more time on it this week, need to start ordering some panels.

Had nightmares at classic ford, the 3dr split a core plug Friday night. Chemical metaled it and drove up sat morn and it blew as I got through the gate. Had to take the car apart and fix it for the drive home.

And ive now got 2 of them? I must be mad....

Right time for a long overdue update, this car really is pretty bad. Should have reshelled it into my mint black 2.0 ghia shell but oh well wheres the fun in that?

Anyway, front floor welded up.



Found more grot on the gearbox tunnel



Now time to tackle the inner and outer sills



Had to cut about an inch into the floor to get rid of the rust



Had a bit of head scratching trying to work out how i was going to repair this part, as im not willing to spend Ł250 on a new pair of inner sills. The plan i came up with was using two 1 meter inchxinch right angle sections welded together to make a t section. Did it and it worked properly, cost me Ł12.

Inner was just as bad as the outer so i cut it all out and welded in new

The car is living outside for the moment so it needed protection, it also had a crease under the fuel filler cap so repaired the whole area.



Few coats of high build primer

Thats upto date, but nice to see some primer going on her.

Wow it is in bad shape.Just to make you feel better.It cost me 1300 quid to have my ns sill repaired both inner middle and outer.Included in that price was a half finished wheel arch and a rear bumper hanger mount.

Great work, well done for saving one, far too many are scrapped these days. Going to be a great car when it's all done. Had to do quite a few rust repairs too mine glad I did it all in the end rather than re shell.

I wish i could have the skill and patients to do body repairs. I've got a welder i just can't use it. Pigeon shit comes to mind lol. Practice makes perfect so they say.

 

Cheers for the comments fellas, im glad i decided to save it, as has been said far too many saphs get broken these days.

I fancied a project, this came up at the right price so why not.

The original plan was to have the welding finished by the end of august, but with starting my own company in september i have lots going on at the moment so i probably wont make that deadline.

As long as i can paint the car while im quiet over christmas i'll be happy.

I want it on the road next summer and at classic ford show, but obviously customers cars will be priority.

 

My mates got a pair of ford NOS inners he wanted Ł250 for, shame it was Ł230 more than i was willing to spend!!!
