Default Starter or Alternator issue?

So, i pull up to the MOT station, and just before I stop, the car lurches, and it feels like a undertray has come off. Take the key out, and its cranking over????..... Lad comes out, pops the bonnet, and smacks the starter motor, and it stops. He says replace the selonoid, and wont happen again.
Is this a starter/alternator issue? Or relay fuse thing?.
Im taking starter motor out later to change sump gasket, worth putting new one in while im on?
CheeRS.

There are no under trays on an RST, but yes if he hit the starter and it stopped then it sounds like the solenoid had stuck on, I've had this on other cars too so I would replace it yeah, have fun doing the sump gasket they are a bitch to get to seal, so not use any sealant!

Turns out the little wire had been repaired by DPO, and was touching the main
wire. Quick easy fix.
Ive got it all stripped out, and have it curing at the moment. Half of the old gasket was lying in the sump, so someone must have had a mare with it. Luckily, im borrowing some of my British Leyland experience to sort it first time, in one go....... Hopefully.

First attempt fail!!...

90% of it was perfect, but the fly wheel side, (where there was no leak previously), was gushing out. about 3" of the half moon hadnt sealed.
Still, not bad for a first attempt.
Is there a definitive answer to get these to seal?
I used Victor Reinz one piece rubber gasket, and Loctite 5922 sealant.
Cork one next go I think.

On a stranger note, the car seems to flooding itself, and wont start when warm or hot. I know it needs resetting up, though so Im not too concerned. Never had this issue before doing sumpp gasket, which is bizarre.

There are two different gaskets for the different years.
Pre 86 is cork
Post 86 is rubber
(iirc)

You can't just fit whatever you fancy
