Hi!

New here, but heck...worth a try anyway

My Ford Mondeo 1999 is eating gas at an alarming rate. Filters OK, lines are good (no dripping).

What could be wrong?

 

There just crap on fuel matey. You will be lucky if you can get 35 mpg out of it.

 

No, I mean at a VERY alarming rate. Yeah, it's a 2,5l V6 but it shouldn't eat petrol at that rate as it does....

 

That's very optimistic even if you don't go over 3k revs and don't open the secondaries, I never seen anything like 35 mpg, even on a run, when our lass was driving

 

Depending on how bad it is, if there is no obvious things like leaks or an old fuel filter, I'd guess the secondaries are constantly open. The cars run an inlet manifold runner controller, this is to save on fuel under 3.5k revs, when you go full throttle over 3.5 revs the secondaries open, so the car gets more fuel/power. Due to the absolutely genius place ford located the IMRC, bolted to the front rocker cover which gets very hot, it's very common with age for the PCB in the IMRC to cook itself, which results in the secondaries not opening at 3.5k. Now this, will actually improve petrol consumption, but a loss in power. Instead of replacing the IMRC, a lot of people will manually jam open the secondaries, so your getting full power from idle, this affects petrol consumption, you use more.

But, I've had three V6 mondeo's, and all were pretty bad on fuel, and that was with fully working and relocated IMRC's

 

Thank god, somebody who speaks english. (metafore for tech-language) Will, look at the secondary-circuits and just brush through the piping.

 

It's not a bad car, just the damn appetite for fuel.

 

Think itd be better if you define what you mean by an alarming rate? Easier to compare against whats normal.

P.S. Ive had 37mpg average out of the 220...urban driving! (and it was very very difficult to do so haha)

 

27 gallons to 435 miles, or roughly 100 litres/700 km. This being highway consumption.

 

My mk1 st v6 will only do about 30 miles to £ 10 in fuel
