Default Mk1 xr2 carb problems.

Hi guys where do I start. Right. I bought a mk1 xr2 in September since I bought it the auto choke was kicking in when ever I came to a standstill, not really a problem, as if I gave the throttle a blip it would drop to where it should be.
Any way I noticed the exhaust blowing slightly from the manifold anyway didn't really think anything of it.
But the next outing I was on the way to the seaside about 5 miles away from home and the car started spluttering quite bad like it was choking itself.
I thought it could be exhaust fumes getting into the air box then back into the engine!.
So I went back home sorted the blowing exhaust and thought right I'll just take it for a spin to make sure id sorted the spluttering, it was fine until it got warm then the spluttering was there again.
So I went back home took the air box off and I noticed the butterfly in the carb was quite loose "flapping about if I pressed it" I'm not quite sure if that was how it should have been so bearing in mind the engine was warm. I loosened the auto choke and turned it so the "butterfly" "paddle" what ever you want to call it went stiff and all the way open. Anyway, it drove like it had never drove since I've had it was brilliant, responsive, felt a lot quicker, I thought great I've fixed it.
Since then the tax had ran out and hadn't used it since November I went to it today and it was running absolutely terrible very low tick over when cold and warm and backfiring when driven when I put my foot down in it. Like it wanted to go but it wasn't getting enough of something had a mess about with the auto choke as it has a coiled spring in it trying to find a happy medium but with no such look. I have a weber carb specalist quite local with a rolling road there as well was thinking to take it there but thought I'd ask you guys first. thanks in advance cheers drew.

If its a standard Mk1 XR2 carb bin it, go to you Webber dealer and buy a 34/34 DMTR carb . I did this and the car was more punchy and ran a lot better , around £240 if I remember correctly .
