Default What to look at when buying an lpg car?

I've seen a car I like, bmw x5 4.8 v8 with an lpg conversion
But I know nothing about lpg
What do I need to look at or check/know about the conversion???

Hope to look at it today.

Lpg kits can burn out the valves on the head.

Check it has plenty of power and the difference between petrol and lpg is very small.

The car will have slightly less power on lpg. But it is only slight.

My mate brought a astravan that went from 90bhp ish on petrol to about 50bhp on lpg turned out the lpg injectors were shot and were £350 each!

first thing you need is the paperwork for the conversion, i had insurance problems because i had none with mine.

After speaking to a mechanic friend and reading this I was a bit put off, rang the guy with the car and he knew nothing about the conversion, said the previous owner had it done but it's not registered with the dvla.
Don't think I will bother.

it doesn't have to be registered with the dvla you do need to inform your insurance of it, and you do need a certificate to prove it was tested.

it's a pain as you can't go on the eurotunnel, so my regular euro jaunts are done by ferry which is slow

as said, make sure it drives smoothly and powerfully, although expect a slight loss of power. They need to be setup well so that the lpg mixture closely matches the petrol mixture, otherwise the ecu can learn whichever you drive on most and then be rich or lean with not enough adjustment in the lambda correction to get back where it needs to be on the other fuel.

my kit has an oil additive bottle that sucks up a bit of valve lubricating oil and mixes it in to the inlet.

it's well worth having though, my galaxy does the cost equivalent of 40mpg on petrol, which is very good for a vehicle of that size and more economical than a diesel.

No paper certificates on LPG conversions nowadays they need tp be registered here:http://www.drivelpg.co.uk/advice-and...icle-register/. Last one I had registered cost £50 for the inspection.

Registration with DVLA gets you a whopping £5 off VED, but as said it's not necessary.

Normally driving you should barely notice the power difference on LPG on a big engine, but MPG will be down, my Disco does 17-20 on the hard stuff and 15-18 on LPG, driving it sensibly, I can get it down to single figures.
