could someone tell me what et is and how it is measured please. does a higher or lower et figure put the wheel further out. been trying to work out what's best for my car.

Offset is almost always positive and is a number of mm, e.g. ET 35 is 35mm. Higher is further in, lower further out.

The higher the number the further out from the centre line the back of the wheel is. Old cars such as MkI and Mk ll Escorts, particularly competition, often have a negative ET.

 

I "think" (hope) we're saying the same thing and not confusing people by using different terminology.

The higher (positively) the ET number is the further the centre line of the wheel is offset from the centre of the hub TOWARDS THE CENTRE OF THE VEHICLE.

So, the answer to the original question.
is:
A higher positive number puts the wheel rim and tyre closer to the centre of the car, i.e. deeper within the wheel arch.

 

Negative and low numbers equals bigger dish on the outside

 

thanks everyone. it's appreciated and i have got it now. bought the wheels anyway with et 38 and look ok. could possibly have gone 35 or slightly lower but they are useable. will try a couple of small spacers to see if i can get a better look on te wheels.
