I’ve finally got round to doing a thread on Dad’s resto of the underside of his 4x4 Sapphire that’s been ongoing for a year now. It started off as a small bit of welding being required on the rear chassis leg and inner sill (the car’s first welding) and as that was the only thing letting the car down Dad thought he may as well tidy it all up a bit. I’ll let the pics do the talking…

To complete: torque everything up, fit the sideskirts, and run new brake and fuel lines.

What did you use to paint the underside?

 

Pretty good thanks Pete! It wasn't too bad no lol

It's just industrial stonechip, not sure of the brand but not brilliant white so the colour match is fairly good. Obviously not a gloss finish...

 

Be aware some stone chip is porous and needs to be top coated don't want your had work to be ruined

Quick question, did you replace past the beam mounts as that huge washer thing isn't standard. any trouble lining it up?

Thanks! Yes it is JonM600BHP's old car and did have them on when he owned it!

Yes the welding required was rear of the mount (just) so holes were untouched, the plates were welded on but we had them removed to keep it all original.

I really hope it lasts longer than mine, I had mine done earlier this year and I've got rust coming back through already which has really pissed me off considering it's supposed to have been treated and had pukka underseal stuff used on it (the guy wanted to use the best stuff apparently)! What's even more annoying is that it hasn't even moved out the garage since being done let alone even driven in the wet!!!

Given up now and considering reshelling into an Escort.

 

Not good at all that m8, prohaps he just rushed it and didnt spend time removing all the rust, have you taken it back to him?

 

He had for over 2 months and the only thing he had to remove was the rear beam!! There was nothing else on the underside to take off!

I spoke to him and he said to me that it should have lasted a hell of a lot longer than that! He also said that he'd have a look at it but he won't be able to anything with it!! Well what's the point in looking at it if he ain't gonna do anything about it?!!!

Pissed off now so I'm just going to get the Cossie running, use it and iron out all the little niggles with it whilst keeping my eyes out for a nice escort.

In fact, one may have come up already......................................

 

Popped round to Dad's the other day with George to do a quick job on the FRS and with a little time left over finished torquing up underneath and gave the exhaust a quick clean. It came up pretty well but will have a polish when it's fitted too...









New Powerflex exhaust mounts have been bought and new U clamps obviously. Just finalising what's required for the fuel lines and they'll be ordered in next day or two, that's the next major job. Until then think he'll get the wheels on and get car off stands and onto ramps.

Simmo, What did you torque up? Just a bit of advice leave all your major suspension components until its back on its wheels. but you prob know that

Pretty much everything's torqued up now at a mid setting, which has been done in the air... but it has been rolling under it's own weight and bouncing about on the back of the transporter after fitting so should be ok.

Very nice, I think the exhaust will let it down as it is,, I had one done by a chap with a proper machine,, came up better than new
