Default Hole in Chassis

A few weeks ago when cleaning my car I noticed a perfect rectangle had been cut out of the cars insulation and carpet. To my suprise where this rectangle was cut, I noticed some very bad corrosion to the point, where it literally took no force to break off and now there sits a hole through the bottom of my car about the size of a 10 pence piece. This is right through the chassis. Ill attach a picture when I can. Whats weird is that the ar has only has door seals done since weve owned it, and we bought it when it was on 32,000 surely something a little dodgy here. I certainly didn't have anything done to do with it. The corrosion is right where the front jack up point is, but on the left hand side of the car, there is no corrosion at all at this point. More to the point, does anyone know what the cause could have been and what cost Im looking at to get it fixed. I can imagine its a straight MOT failure, but I can't anywhere on the net find anyone else with this problem?? It's a MK4 facelift fiesta Y reg, like I said ill post a picture when I can later on!

Another image here

As you can see it's pretty bad, but no corrosion to degree as bad as this can be found anywhere else on the car. Looks like a poor previous job for unknown reason.

As said there is a chassis plate there ie the number is stamped into the floor pan.
Usually a little plastic cover in the carpet to lift up and check the chassis number.
Rotten old fiestas with dodgy history may suffer from this sort of hole in the floor!

Well first things first you need a new metal plate abit bigger than the hole in the carpet with your chassis number stamped on the just cut the old one out and weld in the new one.

ill give you a warning now police will impound the car If thay pull you over and find the chassis number has gone off the shell as its what happens to stolen cars and then sold on with new plates and new vin numbers....

as for cost in a garage less than Ł100 supplied and fitted.

Just wanted to clear something up, when I spotted the corrosion, there was no hole present. But after fiddling with the rust, it broke of thats why there is a hole now. The part was still together, well ish until I poked at it of which then pieces broke off and left a hole...

As above, chassis number is missing. The hole in the carpet is supposed to be there, it should have a plastic flap on it that you lift up and the chassis number should be stamped into the metal where the corrosion now is.

You can see it in this video

My bet is that yours is a stolen car, rung with a different identity. Have a good check of other serial numbers, there should be one in the windscreen, either rivettied to the dash board or underneath the wipers, and another on the front slam panel.

A history check may show it is legit, doesn't mean it is.

Basically, as an example, a fiesta is damaged in a crash, but insurance is not notified and it is not written off. Instead of the car going straight to the scrap yard, another good fiesta is stolen, (yours), and the ID from the crashed one is put in to the good one.

The crashed car is then crushed, hiding all evidence of it, and the owner is now selling a stolen car with the ID from his old crashed one that has since been disposed of.

Lol, I can look on here find the reg of a sliver fiesta about my age write down the number plate and order new number plates online and find the chassis number online as well and order a new log book from the dvla and then order new vin plates from ford and then take a angle grinder to the chassis number on the shell and then I have a whole new car thats hpi clear and sell a stolen car legally before the real owner of the vin and reg even know.

Bottom of windscreen, on a plate on the slam panel between bonnet catch and headlight usually.

Well theres one in the engine bay and one on the dashboard but unlike the floorpan number these can be easily swaped for different ones. Best bet would be to se in the engine number matchs the vin numbers.

Best think id do is remove the seat and move the carpet then clean up the rust up with a wire bush and wd40 and see if you can still make out the numbers and check to see if thay match up if thay do take a picture and get it printed and then replace the it with a new one but and this is a big but if theres no sign of the numbers id scrap the car or reshell the car.

If this was the case the police would be impounding almost every Mk1 escort or classic beetle, agree its a weird place to go and seat and carpet needs to come out and see what your dealing with.

Just wanted to boot up this thread again by looking at the pictures does anybody know how much I should be looking at to fix this spot. Since these pictures I've knocked out all the rust where the hole is so its about 4in in length and same width. I lifted up the carpet earlier and found two other spots, not holes but in bad condition. I would just like the point out that I put the hole through myself by stabbing with a screwdriver. There is also a spot roughly in the same place on the other side of the car, not as bad but also not brilliant. On the side with the hole, because the corrosion spots are in close proximity it would probably mean cutting out a section about A5 size piece of paper to weld in. Ill get some pictures of it all to follow. I did an inspection underneath and other than the spots I can see there doesn't appear to be any more damage, anyone in Cheshire area help a brother out with some welding/rough quotation of what I should be looking at? Mot is 26th of this month but no point taking it in it's current state. Cheers.
