Default Another Puma project!

Well, here goes my first attempt at a project car!

It was cheap, that's the only reason other than having a tubular fanimold to fit it already

It's done 116k but you wouldn't think so, drives lovely and it was super tidy inside. I say was, as it's all been gutted!
Cam belt done last year, just had a full service before I picked it up.

There's no real plans really, I'm putting the Escort away for winter and this fits the gap nicely for a winter hack and it'll nicely introduce me to track days next year.

Not many pictures yet as I forget to take them whilst working on it

I've got more pictures but the new Photobucket is shite and isn't playing ball.

Will update tomorrow!

Scratch that, Photobucket is working again..

First thing I did was start taking the inside out, the sound deadening will be staying until next year when it warms up and I can be bothered to get the heat gun out

Only real plans are breathing mods for the time being, maybe cams next year but I'm concentrating on handling and stopping first, slightly more important!

Quite like it without the grill, looks a bit mean! I'm thinking about an oil cooler mounted in the bottom grill with the hoses running up and through the top grill, but shall see..

I couldn't be doing with the window switches swinging in the wind so bolted it to the door handle.
Also found that the JBL speakers I had in my first car fitted the door perfectly bar drilling 2 little holes and using some self tappers. Took apart the original speaker connection and used the spade connectors already on the cable, works! Result. Sound so much crisper than the standard Ford parts and are lighter too.

Same for the passenger side.

That's it so far, machining up an adapter for the MAF sensor to fit the Green cone filter I've got, the sensor on my old Fiesta must of been smaller as the flange on the filter is the same OD as the MAF!

I've driven a mk5 fiesta Zetec S where the owner concentrated on tightening up the handling more but hasn't really upped power much and I enjoyed chucking it around just lacked a bit on the straights (coming from an RS2k owner myself)

If I have a few quid burning a hole for another car it may be a puma hopefully.

You need to get one mate I've had rs2000 and puma pisses on it through corners and pretty much straights since they weigh less

Pumas are definatly one of the most under rated cars out there and embarrass alot of bigger cars

Thank you for cleaning the thread up

Little update today...

Ordered my coilovers last night, 11 long days wait for them to arrive

So at work today I managed to sneak a little job on the laser, that job being some side mounting plates for my bucket seat.

This is what I drew up on a piece of cardboard last night drew it up on CAD and sent it through to the laser to be cut out of 2mm mild steel. The reason for using steel is that I'm keeping the sliding mechanism from the original subframes, so welding these plates to it.

So with the help of this bad boy..

I ended up with these

Size: 63.8 KB

Will try them tomorrow and see what needs playing with.

That's it today, more to come over the weekend I should think.

The seat sits far too high, my head touches the roof Going to have to modify the original subframe drastically to keep the sliding mechanism! If worst comes to it I'll just rigid mount it to the chasis.

Battlefield 4 turned up today so spare time is going to be minimal

I just bought a puma for a runaround and have exactly the same problem! was thinking about fitting a recaro from another car (rs2k, frst etc), as they normally sit lower?

With the skills at your disposal why don't you chop the doors and weld in a flat sheet with a basic strap for closing and mount the switches flush?

It is what it is at the moment, just need to get in on the road

Another small update, coilovers arrived today!

Will get them fitted up at the weekend and wound down, then book it in for an alignment check/adjustment.

Had to make a little adapter to fit the cone I've got as it's from my old Fiesta which must of had a smaller MAF on it.

Quick squirt of black on it and away we go!

I also need some opinions on badges.. I'm going to get some of the gel overlays from DMB but unsure of what colour to go for! As I'm going for red wheels, perhaps black with red writing?

What about a red back ground with red writing.

If its nice this weekend I might have a go at fitting my cone filter.

Yeah that's what I think I'm going for, however it seems a bit daft considering I only have a badge on the back lol.

I'm crap at updating this.

Got the seat in eventually, it was pointed out to me that keeping the sliding mechanism, and having a harness that FIXES to the car, won't work. Thick moment Haven't got any pictures of the subframe but it's a bit heavy duty, would like to make a lighter set up at some point.

Painted the fanblades satin black and got the coilovers fitted, not too low but I didn't want to ruin the handling.

So much fun to chuck around, I'm thinking of dropping the tyre profile down to a 45 though.
Everyone said the AP coilovers were harsh but I have absolutely no complaints, might be due to the tyre sizing? 195/50/15.

So today I set about welding in a rear strut brace to stiffen the back up, decided to get the heat gun out while I was at it and took some sound deadening out, but one thing leads to another and ended up taking all of it out the back! Just need to clean up the tar shit now.

Also in the above picture you can see the brackets I pressed up for the harness to mount to, but after the negative comments I've seen recently about having your harness at this sort of angle, I think I'm going to make something to mount them onto the rear brace.

That's it for the time being, I've got a rebuilt 2.0 Zetec sat in the garage that dad said about putting it into the Escort so that might be the next job!
