Default Stainless tube..

I'm making up an exhaust for the rest of my Puma, but after getting a quote of £35 per meter for 2 1/2 inch seamless 316 today, I'm not so sure! Is seamless really necessary for an exhaust? I know the seam isn't very big in stainless so would it be an issue or not?

Also, any ideas as to where to get decent universal back boxes from? Can't find any apart from shite Savage or Cherry Bombs!

You dont need Seamless mate. Google Aalco as there should be a local depot near(ish) you, you want 304 welded tube. If your a bit handy/flexible you could always chance your arm and see if they have any offcuts to save you a few quid.

I had it in my mind that the seam would be similar size to that of mild steel, that's why I was worried! Had a look at some at work and there isn't really a seam at all so I've ordered some up, cheers guys

You don't need 2.5" either. 2.25" would be better

It's just to big a diameter for the engine. You'll loose lots of low down tourque and responds for very minimal gains right at the top.
I ran an fiesta rs turbo exhaust on my puma engines zetec s. It ruined it so it came straight of.

Exhausts are far more complicated than some bent pipe under the car. Probably why PowerShonk make such a pigs ear of it so frequently.

Interesting, however 2.25" pretty much doesn't exist with the majority of steel suppliers.

In all fairness, they're not.
It gets complicated when you start factoring in higher flowing heads etc etc.

Well mate, if you know better than the likes of miltek etc. go for it.

If it's a budget motor then no worries aye. Not like your chasing 600bhp.

Not a case of porkies.

Just that industrial suppliers probably use a smaller range of product. It's not that it isnt available...they probably cant be arsed or isnt worth their while.

People like Jetex do universal silencers.

This place sells some stuff too. I bought one of their universal silencers a year or so ago for my van, and was very surprsied at the quality. The actual item was far better than the piece of shit they had photographed

there is far far more to making an exhaust than just bunging some pipe under your car and going by the bigger is better route i used to make performance exhausts for a living and no before you say not for power(doesnt)flow!! though if your car is pretty standard and you follow the routing and silencer sizing/placement of the original exhaust then you wont lose anything, most likely wont make much more power 2-3bhp overall and some more noise

i bought one of their universal silencers and blew the baffles to shit within hours, the powerflow box i had fitted further back was still going strong a few thousand of miles later.
could have been a rogue bad silencer though.
p.s. powerflow only provided the box for the system and not the pipework.

No one has said bigger is better?

I'll be running a 4-2-1 so made sense to do a complete system too.
Went for 2" in the end.

The one I bought had no baffles, it was a perforated straight through design. Mine's been on my van now for easy 150k+

I'd assume they are all like that, or do they do baffled ones too ?
