Default Best cheap 4x4, about 5-6k to play with.

Hello,

So this has nothing to do with my M6 post the other day, ive been put off with 9 MPG

My mum and dad want to sell their van and Mazda tribute and buy a 4x4 that will pull a trailer (not a caravan) Unsure on how much it will need to tow.

They will have about 5-6k to spend, also it cant do any less to the gallon than the Mazda now (30mpg).

They want to sell the Mazda as its only a 2 litre and has no towing power less torque than anything really! My fiesta has more

Its only the two of them init so no need for 7 seats or any room in the back for people as there wont be, room in the boot for a mobility scooter would be nice though but not needed.

Cheers.

hyundai terracan are great pullers, one of the best ground clearances in its market and won 4x4 of the year for farmers monthly or something. ive had one for six years now and nothing gone wrong with it 05 plate too.

or a 2 seater l200 or similar, with a fibre glass back cover for the scooter

You have to ask the question why they "need" a 4x4? Surely a decent diesel car would be better for them. Passat TDi is a nice place to be, would have the grunt to tow and return good mpg.

He mentioned room for a mobility scooter, would one fit in a Passat? Maybe the estate?

My dad cant get in low cars, thats why he's got a van so he can get in and out.

l200 seems alright with a box on the back, they did like the look of the Mercedes-Benz M class.

OH and its GOT to be a manual.

he wants to forget the real offroaders and look at softroaders/gay wannabe offroaders or one of those look a like off roaders that is FWD but styled like a 4x4, such as that daft nissan juke thingy.

They will have the high seating position, decent mpg and towing ability he needs.

A real 4x4 will be able to pull the house behind him but very few of the full sized ones have great fuel economy. Plus at that money, youre buying an old premium grade vehicle so likely to be higher maintenance. At least the soft roaders are aimed at a lower budget level to begin with so not usually so silly to maintain.

Land cruisers achieve 30mpg. I know 2 people with different years and they rave about them. One is a d4d lwb, he's a boring bastard and revels in its 30+mpg.
Running costs would be high i'd guess though as with a lot of Jap 4x4's, parts can be pricey compared to run of the mill stuff.
Are 4x4's not going to be quite high for lifting the scooter into? What about boring stuff like a Peugeot partner escapade/tepee. High seating position but a low enough boot for loading the scooter.
