First of all we fancied a q5 but I know we'll miss the space of the ml plus I'm not sure I fancy putting 20k into something I know will lose major monies over the next few years.
I think the sport market is bottoming out now and I just can't stop thinking it would suit us perfectly plus seeing a mate the other day who has one in black and claimed he'd had no issues got me thinking.
General running costs not really a major issue but I think the 2.7tdv6 thingy would suit best, they seem the cheapest as well.
I've put up to 20k but really would prefer more like £15/16k if poss!!
Seem plenty about but most of the online reviews are very sketchy.
I can do most jobs myself but if they suffer major mechanicals etc I think forewarned is forearmed.
Cheers in advance.

I wouldn't say that making sure my two children traveling in comfort and safety is "tacky as fuck"
The only issue we have had with ours is the electronic handbrake, which turned out to be a new set of brake disks, and handbrake shoes, otherwise it has been spot on.
They are a great size for a family car, our 2.7 goes really well, averaging about 23 mpg.

Was in the same boat but walked away after seeing first hand experience of the reliability of them! Suspension faults, niggly electrics, slow, juicy (for a diesel etc). Shame I've always liked em. Ended up with an S5!

Avoid like the plague.
They're up there with discovery's at the top of the unreliability tree.
Personally I think its a shame because I like the look of them and really wanted a scV8 one but form over function makes no financial sense.
If you simply have to have one just make sure it has plenty of paper work backed history showing things like suspension and electrical issues have been dealt with.

Looking at Vogues at the moment for a winter car. I know a lot of people, especially with sports who have had nothing but grief, even with new ones. I fully intend to buy one with a warranty and fsh, so from that respect even if it goes tits up you're not out of pocket if it's still under warranty.

Have a look here mate, http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/
I have had no trouble with my TDV8 HST ( fingers crossed )
A rep map really wakens them up as well
The V8s are a body off to change turbos as far as I can remember.

So some mixed reviews then!!!
I also like the "big" range rover as well as they just look so nice.
As for tacky as fuck, each to their own but that makes you come across as a bit arsey tbh .Theres plenty of folk out there that think RS models are tacky council estate type vehicles when in all honesty some cost more than the average council house ever did!!!
Still the "issues" are a concern, are the vouges any better? I'm coming out of a merc ml which has been how shall we say pretty un-Germanic in its build quality and although not fundamentally unreliable there's been a lot of issues that needed to be resolved!!!

Fucking awful things. Mrs sister had one for 6 months and it was in and out of the dealers like a yoyo, leaking oil over the drive was the last straw and it got chopped in. She was devastatingly dissapointed with her ownership.

mate had a new one at the back end of 2009, some deiseasal version and it was fine for the few months he had it, but he said it was juicy as fuck and, for the money, he should have got the petrol version

Still,forewarned and all that.
Having worked on a few, i wouldnt touch one with a bargepole. Most people who buy them, even those that can afford to run them, get sick of forking out to fix them and get rid!
A mate of mine has the SC 4.2 and it's been spot on for the 2yrs he's had it. Only issue he's had was a stone through one of the rads. He's poly-bushed the whole thing and it made a massive difference.
He's thinking of selling it for a newer one. I've used it a few times while he's been working away and it's not as thirsty as you'd expect if you take it easy. Managed the dizzy heights of 22mpg on my commute but it'll usually do 16-20 although I have seen it at 10ish when you need to nip on.

I had a TDV6 sport for 2 years, awesome big car, I replaced a suspension compressor, battery, wheel bearing and parking sensor wiring, all wear and tear stuff.
I heard all the horror stories before I bought it but if you listen to all the shite people talk you wouldn't buy anything, have all the people that have replied above owned and driven a Sport ?????

Hmmm sounding a bit more positive now!!!
Fudgey, love the cayenne, turbo would be awesome.
Perhaps consider a petrol then as well, wasn't aware there was such a closeness in fuel consumption.
And Glenn,I'll have to borrow to buy it mate, not much under the bed anymore!!!

I test drove a few 2.7's when I was looking to buy my last A3, (the one I wrote off), I thought it was horrible, 188hp for a big car like that!
The only one I would have is a low mileage 4.2 SC, it will have been looked after as rich people owned them!
I do like the SDV6 3.0 and the 5.0 though.
The problem with them is image, people see one down here and they automatically assume you are a drug dealer, as do the police, a mate has one and he gets pulled all the fucking time because, young guy driving a black RRS...
Get a Q7.

the 2.7's have an horrendous reputation for lunching the big end bearings, the same engine is in the S type Jaguar, basicly the DPF shits itself filling the sump with diesel and taking the bearings out. 4.5 grand for an engine plus labour.. ouch.
the bearings are just starting to come to the market tho

I've had a 2.7v6 for 4 years , still got it... Only had to replace some suspension bushes. Had it remapped when I got it to 240 bhp, runs perfect & get 23-25 mpg. I've had a vogue td6 as well, that is a far superior car to the sport in my opinion, next car will be the proper Range Rover for me again. Nice to read all the other comments about other problems people have had with their cars...
lol
they are just scattered around the housing estates round this town. Prob cost more than the equity in their flats/houses.
But, we all like different stuff don't we. I've got an Impreza, lot of people wouldn't be seen dead in the chav piece of jap shit. Me, couldn't give a fuck what anyone else thinks.
I will recommend you avoid though, not from an image point but a reliability. I know a guy who's had one from new and it was in the dealers all the time, he was always moaning like hell about it.

A friend of mine has just spent in excess of 40k on a Kahn built rrs (not sure if thats a good thing of not!), already been back to the dealer with electrical issues within a fortnight. Dont get me wrong a lovely motor but reliability puts me off. Get a Dodge ram SRT10!
my old mans got an 06 v8 diesel sport, nice car pulls well has had an alternator and boot switch and that's it and hes done 25000 miles in it so far its upto about 80000 now with full dealer history.

Loved my Impreza, one of the best cars I've ever owned if not the best,I couldn't give a fuck what others think of image etc re: the rangey but they do seem to have a lot of expensive issues which is putting me off right now.
Would an x5 be any better?
Saw a cracking one for £13k with 69k on it in a hideous brown colour although I'm thinking wrap it or get my mate to paint it up nice.
Descisions descisions!!!

I bought my Q7 new in march 2012 and it's an awesome car love everything about it except the tyre consumption.
