Hi, i am currently looking to buy a saff but i was after a bit of advice as to which i should go for ie. 2wd or 4x4 what are the pros and cons of them both, is it true 4x4 gearboxes can be a bit dodgy? and what kind of stuff should i be looking for as i have no experience with cossies at all?
They are only "dodgy" once u go over a certain amount of power.
Pros and cons are mainly how easily you can tune them, ie. the 4x4 box cant take as much power as the 2wd so is alot more expensive if u want to go futher.
2wd is obviously arse out time and can be a big handful in the wet. If you dont know what u are doing its not going to be long till you meet the hedge!
Go for one with either low mileage or one that has been rebuilt (engine) within the last few years. Make sure its got as much history as possible and has been looked after.
All the usual checks when buying a car apply...

If you're not sure I'd say go for a 4x4, the traction is great and it's going to be safer unless you are used to high power RWD cars. The price difference isn't that much, and you only need to worry about the strength of the 4wd system if you're going for big bhp (ie. over 350 I think??).

Yea 4x4 but I'm biased
The gear box is the same as that used in the XR4x4 and is stronger then the T5 which is used in the 2wd, its just that when upping the power in a 4x4 there's alot more work that the box has to contend with cos is four wheel drive isn't it

if i was gonna do it all over again i'd deffinately go for a 4x4 but there's no chance of me swapping mine now cos i love it too much
2wd is useless in the wet to say the least, got beaten by my mates RS2000 the other day on roundabouts etc.
basicly i'd say when buying one spend as much as you can afford but make sure it's got concrete history to back up the price. no point spending 3k on a OK example thats going to need rear arches and a engine rebuild in 6-12 months time.
check all the usual places for rot. inner wings, boot floor, chassis rails etc. don't forget even the latest sapphs are 12 years old now.

I'd go for a 2WD if you're after extra fun
To me, fun is being able nail it out of a wet roundabout with your passenger grinning at the smug git in his scooby as you power on past... glad I chose the 4x4
Biased of course
As for transmission, I don't think they're as bad as a lot of peeps make out. I was told almost 10 yrs ago to start saving for a new gearbox... 60,000 miles later it's still going. Noisey as fook like...
