The gear box is the same as that used in the XR4x4 and is stronger then the T5 which is used in the 2wd, its just that when upping the power in a 4x4 there's alot more work that the box has to contend with cos is four wheel drive isn't it
I totaly agree with you on that one the main problem with a 4x4 box is in fact the transfer box as when they do fail which isnt that often they lunch the whole box
