Default astra gte digi clocks into a rs 1600i?

I fancy fitting a set of astra gte digital clocks into my rs 1600i I know its not to everyones taste but I really like the retro look of them and I wanna keep the car looking old skool hence why I don't want a stack dash or anything like that. I've found enough info to get the majority of the wiring done its just the speedo that my main concern. So this got me thinking as the car is at devil developments getting a nice new zetec turbo engine built and fitted soon as i get it back I wanna fit a focus rs gearbox. Would it be possible to some how use the electric speedo drive on the focus rs box to run the astra gte digi speedo or am I miles off here lol? It'd be killing two birds with one stone lol

Watch out for the speedo sender unit going up in flames, quite common by all accounts.

Sender unit from the frs gearbox?
I don't know where you'd take a feed from the frs box tbh as the frs will get is signal from a speed bearing or through the ecu.

Thats basically what im trying to find out how the frs gearbox speedo works? Obviously they dont run a cable so dose it run some sort of transponder like the astra gte or are they ecus?

You need to watch what GTE dash you get/use, as there are diff types.
I fitted one recently, the car had elec speedo sender and was pretty straight forward to do.

i should have the wiring diagrams kicking about if you need it too

The dashes came in 8v and 16v forms 8v the more desirable. Both types have a switch on them which changes the readings for tyres size variations on the back of them. The transponders to the gearbox are wired with 3 wires iirc. 1 is the signal. But you can by pass using the transponder if you can find the signal wire from the car and wire to the signal from the dash. I believe the signal is a green wire from memory. The speedo will always be slightly out especially at high speeds with large wheels. I have a diagram of the wires also but a google search will sort you out. They are a piece of piss to fit tbh. There are about 4 earths from the back of the dash that you can join and run to earth.

You'll need to change the switch on the back of the clocks.

Sounds like that switch to me! It's worth noting if it says mph or kph. You change that by twisting the trip button I think

Is there any speed signal wires in the rs 1600i I can tap into? Or what other ways can i get a single for the digi speedo?

No problem Sir Clinton! That's what mates are for

Rob, if you were to keep your current box it wouldn't be a problem with the speedo drive. The only real way is to pick it up from the management now. If it's decent it will have all the outputs you'll need. If your using ofab I'm not too clued up on it

I dont think the rst box is going to last long with a 350+bhp zt lol thats why I wanna change it soon as.

Il give devils a ring when I get a chance and ask him if the kms ecu can run the gte speedo

I'm not too sure if there is a kit to pull a signal from the coil pack that converts it to a digital speed signal. I'm sure there was one years ago to do the same from a distributor?? Give DD a ring and put it to them? Or source a mtx box instead of a frs?

I have fitted a few sets,Sapphire,mk3 cab, novas etc over the years. The Sapp by the way was the easiest to get the transducer to work. The car was a ghia and had fuel computer and it had a two piece speedo cable with a pick up on the bulkhead. I just fastened it on there. The speed was way out but I found that swithing it from mph to km showed a true mph reading !!.
