1.9 tdi's are the best 1z's/pdi's these go on forever and i've had 250k one's loads of times with no issue's. pd's can be remapped easily for really good power, my 1.9tdi passat pd is around 170-180bhp now with 186k on the clock

the 2.5 etc v6's are problematic and cost in the long run unless you are careful, same with the 2.0litre tdi's that i've seen people own and garages work on.

my daily is a 04 audi a4 avant, 1.9tdi
i keep saying i'm gonna get rid of it for something newer
but i cant bring myself to part with it, been a great car
if your going diesel get the 1.9 as they're pretty bulletproof, the later 2.0 isnt as good and the 2.5 is well known for its unreliability
if petrol avoid the 1.8 turbo's, as they're heavy on fuel and have very poor performance
but they are generaly very good cars that will be happy at 200-300k miles if looked after

If your getting a 2.0 make sure its a common rail, not a PD, as they have oil pump problems, otherwise stick with a slightly older 1.9 which are reliable. I've got a 2.0 common rail which i bought with just over 100k and it drives like new. Road tax is £140 a year and good economy.
