If there is a rumbling noise on tickover, most likely its the bottom aux pully, rev the car and the noise goes away, nothing major most mondeos suffer this.

But if its really really bad and doesnt go away with a rev its probably the dmf shitting its pants.

Starting issues, vibration from engine, try and make sure its cold when you start it up, rear drop links, smoking blue or black probily a few more but that's all I can think of

Basically don't buy one, I shall list the common faults.. no lie about any of these I am a mechanic and work on these day in day out!! Crankshaft pulley, tensioner pully, alternator faults, egr valves seize, intake manifolds block up, water pumps leak, duel mass flywheels fuck up, slave cylinder bleading valves crack leaving you with no clutch, turbo veins seize up (no power and in limp mode), injectors Shit themselves, + terminal wiring to starter motor short out and burn to nothing, starter motors seize, front wheel bearings.... Basically if it knocks when its running or the glow plug coil light is constantly flashing when driving it or its smoking loads, keep well away my friend you could spend easy a grand and a half on parts, hope you take note of this they are a terrible car I'm affraid to say!

They're good value if you find a good one.

I struggled to find a good Mk3 for my money of any description, diesel, petrol, 1.8/2.0/v6 etc.. All of them were either buggered inside, been to the moon and back or mechanically shot. I know there are plenty about but i was surprised at just how poorly maintained they were. I gave up looking, all the best looking ones were 200+ miles away, too far to turn up to a nail. I was offloading a 167k partner and that was mint inside and out apart from 2 very minor dents. I just wanted a normal car again.

After a bit more digging too i learned that the petrols had a dmf too, i always thought it was just the diesels.

I could reel off a list of common TDI faults. VWs are definitely not the most reliable diesels out there!
