Default sender for s2 fuel tank?

heres the story....

current fuel tank on my s2 started leaking so i ordered a new one from someone on here - just said it was a ersts2 so expected the right one as he obviously knows his fords!

anyway, took it all apart today old tank out etc. and goes to put the new one in and the sender hole is roughly double the size of the original tanks hole

basically this is the tank I have:

and this is the tank I was sent:

it all fits bar the sender (albeit the vent is at the wrong angle but thats no biggy.

so anyway, i pm'd matey and he basically said that my old tank must be wrong (?) as all series 2s have a large sender....
is this correct?

He went on to say the small sender doesnt have a swirl pot, however i checked and it does...
so basically i have a small sender and a swirl pot; which apparantly isnt possible

who's right, and more importantly what should I do cos i need the thing moving cos its taking up someones garage atm....try and find a tank with a small sender and swirl pot or buy a large sender?

anyone had one out that can confirm whether im right/wrong?

ps. it is the original ford tank so i think im right

cheers

Rich, Tricky seemed to know his stuff:

on Efi models the pump/sender was 1 unit, when they say in the tank its just screwed in by 60 degrees, thats your fuel pump/ sender.

earlier mfi cars had the external bosch pumps under spare wheel well, if ordering for RS Turbo you want the early type tank from 86 on (also does the mfi XR3i), if an Efi XR3i then the 89 on tank with large sender hole.

hth

Tricky
if you have an RS Turbo Mk4 order the 86-89 tank(small sender) even if your car is 1990-all RS Turbos (as far as i know anyway had pump under spare wheel well).

word of warning though-if ordering from sel before signing for delivery check it has swirl pot inside, we have a trade account with them and order quite a few tanks, quite a few of the pattern tanks havent got swirl pot.

hth

Tricky
I got confused by their pics tho (the ones u have posted above) the holes are wrong as u say....I'd be tempted to buy an original ford one, I got a quote for one from fordpartsuk it was arounf £140 tho iirc

got mine trade mate.I found an XR3i tank in the scrapyard but my mate said it would work fine until the car was really hot in the middle of summer and then i would have problems with the engine hunting because of the size of the swirl pot in the tank. The rs tanks swirl pot is bigger apparently? How do they get the pot in the tank?Might be before they weld it shut but surely not through that little hole?
