Default Mk6 Escort PATS transceiver - do I need to get keys coded when replacing?

Got a car that won't start because of what's according to the auto-electrics guy I had out a faulty pats transceiver, his diagnostics gizmo reported something like 'No response from PATS transceiver' ... can't get much plainer than that

The car is a 1998 Escort Estate 1.8 16v Gti

I understand it's not quite as simple as just getting a replacement transceiver but I might need to get it 'coded' into my car/keys?

There's a same part number transceiver with key on my ebay watch list (no-one else bidding on it -fingers crossed!), I'm wondering if there's any way I can avoid taking it to ford's and getting it 're-coded' as I've seen some info on the web saying I'd need to do

Anyone know if there's a way around it like maybe swapping the chips in the keys over? (Or any other bright ideas)

Also, shouldn't any auto-locksmith be able to do any key coding that's required?

Could I even do it myself?

I think I might've struck gold

Found someone selling a 'set' off a same year gti containing both door locks, boot lock, petrol cap, ignition barrel, one new style remote central locking key, transponder ring, and ecu

Forty five quid ... gotta be a bargain!

I believe I should just be able to swap everything over and bob's yer uncle, will need to get a spare made but that's a minor issue

you need the "pats" ring that goes around the ignition barrel, and also the ECU, keys and locks as a set to do it properly. this will be cheaper than getting it "reset"

the set you mentioned above should do the job fine

easy job will take you 90mins tops to change over everything, hardest job is to remove rivet holding ecu cage onto passenger side footwell and thats no real biggy

I'd already taken the ecu out when first investigating this to check if there was any corrosion etc on the ecu contacts

There wasn't any rivets needing drilling out, just a bolt holding it in place (could have been taken out in the past maybe)

The kit I ordered should be here monday or tuesday so by wednesday I oughta know if it's done the trick

You need pats ring/ECU and and chip from the keys to reuse in your key from another escort gti otherwise you will have to change all your lock.... fuck that carefully use a small flat screwdriver to remove the tap on the key the chip looks like a house plug fuse just swap them over job done then you will not need to replace your locks

Thanks for the suggestion doga-ot, but a mate of mine has changed the locks, ignition etc on a mk6 before says it was dead easy, didn't take long and he's offered to pop over and do the whole lot for me so I don't see much point in me poncin around trying to bastardize keys
