Default Sub £500 car, what would you buy?

Hi all

I have £500 to buy me a car to get me to work and back everyday, what would you choose that'll make my 12 mile commute at 5am a laugh.

Criteria is simple, must not cost a bomb to run/maintain.

Inspire me passionford.

nowadays £500 does go far, you simply need to set your sights on something you fancy within reason of course and start trawling the web and small ads

Focus/Mondeo

You'll get a Mazda 6 or Lexus IS200 for £500

Does it actually go into reverse? Last mark 3 golf gti 16v I had it had issues going into reverse, first, second most of the times. Once had to be pushed backwards out of a car park as I couldn't get reverse ended up selling it

A little 1 litre French turd will cost you less than 500 .if its just a cheap run around to get you to work it'll do the job very cheaply.

Can't believe nobody's suggested an MX-5! Most fun you'll ever have for less than a grand - as long as you can get over the image.

Ford Ka 1999 1.3
Ford Fiesta 1997 1.3
Ford Focus 1999 1.4
Ford Mondeo 1999 1.8

Cheapest fords your going to get over all.

Over all the focus is the cheapest for tax fuel and insurance..

If you want it really cheap i know something that will only cost you £50 insurance £20 tax and a thrid of a cost in fuel save you loads of ££££ does 100 miles to a tank which only costs £8 a little 50cc moped

I picked up a 2001 Puma 1700 for £400, needed a spring and tyre, then taxed it and now I love it, quick, good spec and great on fuel

When I bought cheap daily car, I chose Honda Accord '93. Cost me 850 euros here, I don't know how much they cost in UK or if you get better cars for that money over there. It was realiable and with 290 000 km on the clock I didn't need to do any kind of fixing or maintenance. It was even pretty good car to drive for a jap car. Only bad thing was that it had only 110 hp (2 litre engine) and had fuel consumption of a V6. And yes, they do rust.
